Sacramento-Gov. Jerry Brown has a new tax proposal to sell the Legislature: raise levies on some large out-of-state corporations in exchange for new sales-tax exemptions for companies who make products and hire people in California.Under a plan to be unveiled in Sacramento on Thursday, Brown will ask lawmakers to revert state sales tax formulas to the way they were computed before 2009. That would force many large companies that sell their goods in California, but do not employ many Californians, to pay more in sales taxes. The request was part of Brown's original budget plan that was rejected by lawmakers.

I guess Gavin Newsome’s fact-finding junket to Texas fell on deaf ears.

The best thing Brown could do would be to slash business taxes and remove regulations.

Does anyone notice the correlation between states with the most aggressive and highest taxes and a high degree of gun control? I wonder if politicians see a personal danger they are trying to avoid.

Just received the bill for the elevator permit in a small office building I own in California. The permit fee was DOUBLE from a year ago. There is likely a lot of this going on in state agencies who are threatened with cuts to their operating budgets. Also the Sanitary District in which I live increased their annual fees by 10% this year and another 10% next years. They actually admit in their newsletter that part of this is going to be used to shore up their pension plan. The rest goes for “federally mandated” wastewater treatment “improvements.” These charges, when added to the tax increases that are seen by everyone, will drive the final nails in the State’s downfall. Come on bankruptcy, you can’t arrive soon enough for me!

Businesses will totally start migrating from across the globe to make California home. Once they realize how quickly they can increase their operating costs, pay higher taxes, and make a lot less profit, the sky’s the limit! Think about the time savings - they can probably announce layoffs shortly after filing State of Incorporation papers and perhaps even begin consulting attorneys for a Chapter 7 liquidation. Such a time saver! Great job Gov. Jerry!

Jerry, Jerry, Jerry...

The real goal here is to figure out why those companies operate from out of state.

It’s not to force them to quit doing business here altogether.

I used to think the Democrats had no clue whatsoever. I’ve had to revise that. They are experts at killing businesses, jobs, and commerce in the state. None better, if that’s your idea of making the state strong.

What if those out-of-state companies stop selling their products in CA for you to tax, Gov. Brown? With as unfriendly a business and regulatory climate as CA has, it's not like you'll be seeing a stampede by businesses to migrate to this overtaxing Hellhole. In fact, just the reverse.

What's fun is to watch the idiots in the Assembly keep jacking up the taxes and the state tax receipts keep declining and the businesses keep voting with their feet and leaving. CA truly does have a death wish or the state is being run by a bunch of lunatics (or maybe both).

Couldn’t agree more.

At the same time, have you seen the Republican state leadership try to capitalize on the fact that the Democrats and the unions have controlled the state capital for close to 60 years, and this is what that has led to?

The answer is a glaring NO.

It’s part of the reason why I absolutely loathe the Republican party. They might as well have gifted this state to Mexico, for the way they have abandoned it.

Do you realize that less than five million well placed votes would put this state back in the win column, and yet the Republican leadership gifts the Democrats 54 electoral votes every four years.

They gift it to the Dems on off year elections too.

It would be nice to see the Tea Party contest the state, since the R. P. won’t.

Sounds like an interstate tariff to me. I’m pretty sure the commerce clause was created to prevent that sort of protectionism.

"The best thing Brown could do would be to slash business taxes and remove regulations."

No! Taxes must be raised by 300% at least and the EPA etc. must double down on their Regulations. We, as good Socialists, know that higher taxes can only lead to more jobs, and Regulations make our life better.

The only way to convince the IDIOT Democrats is what I shall term 'The Russian Method.' Let them tax, spend, regulate and disincentivize themselves into bankruptcy and oblivion just like the Soviet Union did. They are doing it slowly - let them do it at Warp Speed and get it over and done with quickly so that we can start to rebuild ASAP.

Raise taxes on out-of-state corporations?

Sounds like that Monty Python skit where the MP’s decide they should “tax all foreigners living abroad”.
