President Barack Obama on Friday sacked a controversial proposed regulation tightening health-based standards for smog, bowing to the demands of congressional Republicans and some business leaders.
Obama overruled the Environmental Protection Agency and directed administrator Lisa Jackson to withdraw the proposal, in part because of the importance of reducing regulatory burdens and uncertainty for businesses at a time of rampant uncertainty about an unsteady economy.
The announcement came shortly after a new government report on private sector employment report showed that businesses essentially added no new jobs last month and that the jobless rate remained stuck at a historically high 9.1 percent.
The withdrawal of the proposed EPA rule comes three days after the White House identified seven such regulations that it said would cost private business at least $1 billion each. The proposed smog standard was estimated to cost anywhere between $19 billion and $90 billion, depending on how strict it would be.

Watch the other hand.
HA! me too.
Every EPA dictate should be required to have a human (property) impact report and an economic impact report before implementation and enforcement.
All regulations from the EPA with the force of law (ie, ALL) should be required to be approved by Congress.
Yup.
They’re up to something.
Get rid of the epa, and the fed, while your at it...and the DOE, and the NEA, etc, etc, etc....
"Women and minorities to be impacted by more pollution!"
"Bowing" again, eh? I can hear lib heads exploding already.
There, fixed it.
They all ready do. The gubmint ignores this at will...
Yup. This maniac will replace it with something more devious and go behind the backs of everyone like a gutless snake. If he can pass the Dream Act without the OK of Congress, he will do the same here.
Must be an election year.
—I smell desperation.—
Yep. I’ve told my friends not to worry much about new government regulations becuase the government has pretty much run its course. It will start losing the power to enforce much of anything beyond traffic stops by next year.
Well, the swat teams will still be breaking into the wrong homes and shooting poodles, but that is fodder for a different thread.
Overruled the EPA huh. That’s funny, as they’re the jackboots who have been responsible for implementing much of his crushing agenda.
The other hand will only kick in if he wins in ‘12. The realization is setting in that he is very unpopular, and that for some reason Americans aren’t enthused about skyrocketing inflation and depression-era job losses. Axelrod has probably slapped Obama silly, and he is sullenly ‘pulling back’ in the interest of snookering the voters one more time. If, via a third party, he squeaks a Nov 12 victory, he will go hog wild—with regulations and every other calamitous progressive pipe dream. We just have to pray he doesn’t get a second term.
Only for today.
Left to their own devices this will return and the lurch to the left will continue.
Desperation maybe... Deception ABSOLUTELY. This is, of course, about an effort to live to destroy another day.
