PICKET: '05 Kelo decision a failure; CT site remains a dump
Washington Times Water Cooler ^ | Sept.3, 2011 | Kerry Picket

Should it be any surprise that six years after the horrible landmark Supreme Court's 2005 case Kelo v. City of New London, which brought about the decision that governments could seize private property for the sole reason of "economic development," the Fort Trumbull site in question is today a total dump, where "economic development" by the local government has ceased to ever happen?

The Eminent Domain blog, Gideon's Trumpet, points out that the site has sat there for years following the court's decision and has become overgrown with weeds and other vegetation. It is a far cry from the well maintained middle class neighborhood the New London government kicked out and bulldozed over years ago in the name of "economic development."

I am still glad Perry didn’t sell us to Cintra. We’d be the Illegal & drug Superhighway to North America by now with a million displaced Texans.

They must have been waiting for “The ONe” to come along and take the helm with all his ideas for shovel-ready jobs. In a way, it’s refreshing to see a prime example of the rewards of Socialism. Let’s see how much of the MSM it hits.

I will never be able to understand thereasonong in the majority opinion. Totally contravenes the fourth amendment to the Constitution of the United States. But then the government has been violating property rights for years.

Pfizer developed this property!
Electric Boat boat it from them in 2008 or 2009. I know, because I work in this building.

Electric Boat bought it from them. I work there. I am going there tomorrow. Electric Boat bought it from Pfizer to house the engineers they would eventually hire to work on the OHIO Class replacement project submarine. I am not sure what your point is. Pfizer did not develop every parcel of land, but Pfizer did build a huge building there, for about 350 million dollars. EB got it very cheap when Pfizer left.

I think you will see it is developed.

In general, I believe you and I can agree about the goverment seizing property. This property has been developed. I do not believe to the extent Pfizer promised. Pfizer left, and will never come back. The building Pfizer built, and Electric Boat bought, is currently the largest property tax payer in the entire city of New London.
