Republicans ask Obama to send Congress trade pacts (South Korea, Panama and Colombia)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Nearly a dozen Republican senators on Wednesday urged President Barack Obama to quickly send Congress three long-delayed trade deals that they said would help put Americans back to work.

"If the president really cares about jobs, he will send up the agreements immediately," Senator Rob Portman told reporters, referring to deals with South Korea, Panama and Colombia signed more than four years ago.

With Obama set to outline his ideas for reducing high U.S. unemployment in a speech on Thursday night, Senator Mike Johanns urged the president to announce that he will send the pacts to Congress this week.

The senators said they were frustrated that Obama has repeatedly called on lawmakers to approve the trade pacts but still has not formally submitted them to Congress.

"We can't pass them if you don't send them up," Senator Roy Blunt said, noting the trade deals have been on Obama's desk since he became president in January 2009.

The administration estimates the agreements will boost U.S. exports by about $13 billion, helping to create or sustain about 70,000 jobs.

However, it has delayed sending the agreements to Congress because of its lingering concerns over renewal of an expanded Trade Adjustment Assistance program to help retrain workers who have lost their jobs because of foreign competition.

At a separate news conference, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he would not schedule action on the trade bills unless the House passes the TAA program first.

"Unless (TAA) passes the House, we're not going to take up any of the trade bills over here," Reid told reporters.

House Speaker John Boehner "has said he will get this done, but I think we have to make sure that something doesn't go awry," Reid said, ..

If Obama call on Congress to pass these during his speech tomorrow night, we need someone with the courage to yell “You lie!” again.

So clearly, Reid puts union interests above those of the rest of us.

They're gonna run Obama ragged...and he's going to grit his teeth and do it...because he doesn't have a choice.

I predict, that in the end, Obama himself will kill Obamacare ...maybe January SOTU or next October.

And where's Michelle?? His loyal ally...nevermind...she's at a dress fitting!!

Zero has been LYING over the last several months by placing the blame on Congress for not passing the trade pacts.

He has never sent them up.

McConnell has finally got a podium for calling him out on it.

Getting the Columbian trade deal passed was Pres. Bush's ONE request of Obama before he left office. Obama's has gotten away with ignoring him until now.

If you go back to Obama’s SOU 2011 he gave all the info for tomorrows speech then. It is just the same recycled hash from a hack politician.

“To help businesses sell more products abroad, we set a goal of doubling our exports by 2014 – because the more we export, the more jobs we create at home. Already, our exports are up. Recently, we signed agreements with India and China that will support more than 250,000 jobs in the United States. And last month, we finalized a trade agreement with South Korea that will support at least 70,000 American jobs. This agreement has unprecedented support from business and labor; Democrats and Republicans, and I ask this Congress to pass it as soon as possible.

Before I took office, I made it clear that we would enforce our trade agreements, and that I would only sign deals that keep faith with American workers, and promote American jobs. That’s what we did with Korea, and that’s what I intend to do as we pursue agreements with Panama and Colombia, and continue our Asia Pacific and global trade talks. “ Page 7

He just never got around to SENDING IT to Congress.

The jobs bill is in January’s statement in the same SOU 2011: Page 6

“Over the last two years, we have begun rebuilding for the 21st century, a project that has meant thousands of good jobs for the hard-hit construction industry. Tonight, I’m proposing that we redouble these efforts.

We will put more Americans to work repairing crumbling roads and bridges. We will make sure this is fully paid for, attract private investment, and pick projects based on what’s best for the economy, not politicians.

Within 25 years, our goal is to give 80% of Americans access to high-speed rail, which could allow you go places in half the time it takes to travel by car. For some trips, it will be faster than flying.”

In fact, I will bet that if one follows the SOU 2011 address from January, the ideas and presentation will be identical.

These TAA’s are just more money for the unions and Obama’s friends. They are a waste of money.

These trade deals do export jobs and bring in the cheap imports. It has to be cheap imports, because our jobs went over seas.

During the run up to the debt ceiling deadline, Obama was saying Congress could ratify these treaties now to help the economy.

Did the press call him on it?

(crickets chirping)
