Politico ^ | Sept. 7, 2011 | Ben Smith

Mitt Romney's campaign leapt just now on Rick Perry's restatement of his view that Social Security is a "Ponzi scheme" and that promising to maintain it in its current form is a "monstrous lie."

"PERRY DOES NOT BELIEVE SOCIAL SECURITY SHOULD EXIST," read the headline of Romney's press release.

Romney adviser Stuart Stevens emails:

He has lost. No federal candidate has ever won on the Perry program to kill Social Security. Never has. never will.

If Romney’s people like act like this, he will lose the general. Act with a little intelligence and don’t create straw man arguments like the Democrats do.

Social security, medicare/medicaid, welfare and public schooling are all programs that should not financed through the government. A conservative having a conservative view now is a sign of failure? Romney, I was backing you, but this outlandish decree is nonsense.

and when I saw lose the general...if his team acts like this during the primary, and he ends up the candidate, he will alienate too many people and lose the general.

No federal candidate has ever won on the Perry program to kill Social Security. Never has. never will.

The RINO is Romney came out tonight. I thought he'd have waited atleast until he had won the nomination before showing his true colors.

My take on the debates and Romney. Romney attacked Rick Perry from the left as if he was trying to win the liberal democrat votes. Strange since this is a republican debate.

Social security is what it is, calling it a ponzi scheme is immature and will get you rear kicked at the polls.

Thats because Perry has some convictions and we all saw it tonight.

He didn’t back down on Social Security and Ponzi Scheme.

He didn’t back down on lots of Capital Punishment Executions, You come to Texas....and you’r getting executed...”

He didn’t back down on Global Warming.

LOL and the Romney campaign is desperate.

"Something is wrong here when I reflexively want to defend Perry."

It's just the American sense of right and wrong. The poo being thrown at him is just wrong.

I didn’t watch the whole thing, but I did see the Social Security question. I guess Perry wrote a book, and called Social Security a Ponzi scheme, or something like that. They tried to back him up, and he stood his ground. Hell, yes it’s a Ponzi scheme, and anyone with a brain knows in the coming years there’s going to be little or nothing in the Social Security bank for you. This is the first time I’ve heard Perry talk, and I thought his Social Security answer was great.

At some point the reality of the Social Security Ponzi scheme failure will loom too large to ignore. Apparently that fact is lost on the Mittens entourage. As for me, I don’t think I can bear voting for another RINO.

We disagree on Perry in general, but agree on this point. No matter the validity of the argument, it is stupid politics.

This election needs to be about jobs, jobs, jobs. Period.

What a sleaze. Just shows how sleazy he really is. Distorting and throwing out a headline like that. Romney's tactics are the same as democrats; scare the seniors.

With that said, Perry better clarify.
