President Obamas jobs speech represented the lowest ratings hes received for any address to a joint session of Congress of his presidency.
The speech garnered 31.5 million viewers, according to the website TVbythenumbers, which was slightly lower than his Sept. 2009 health care speech to Congress, which drew 32.1 million viewers and is probably the fairest comparison.
But viewed against other addresses to Congress, it looks worse, and is part of a broader downward trend.
During his first speech to a joint session of Congress in February 2009, Obama drew 52.4 million viewers. His first official State of the Union Address on January 2010 drew 48 million viewers and this years SOTU had 42.8 million.
His highest rated speech of all time was his speech on the death of Osama bin Laden, which drew 56.5 million viewers, though it wasnt to a joint session. Nor were his speeches on Iraq and Libya, which drew 29.2 million and 25.6 million, respectively.
The ratings of last nights jobs speech were probably hurt by the fact that it started at 7 p.m. EST, which was 4 p.m. on the West Coast.

"I think most people turned on last night's speech, and mistook it for a re-run of Chairman O's first, second, third or fourth speech where he said he's "focused" on jobs now that he's back from vacation....."
WEALTH CREATION is the issue not jobs.
yup, good old “grow the pie” economics
Na, they were hurt by the fact that people already know what this looser POS was gonna say, since he's said the same damn thing 3 times before and we're sick of hearing him and we just wanted to watch the damn football game and try to forget for a few hours how much this idiot is ruining our great republic.
Exactly right.
I think Obama has reached the point of diminishing returns with his speeches. Big numbers of people are tuning him out, and don’t really care what he has to say.
I was in a small restaurant with one large tv showing the speech. I arrived just before he entered the chamber. No one looked up to even glance at it, other than the restaurant owner who probably was just trying to look busy while he took a break.
If you heard one of his speeches you heard them all
But the phillies pre-game show was on. If only 0 thought about that first.
The speech garnered 31.5 million viewers
I am surprised to see that many folks watched rehash. I guess that is a definition of insanity. Watching Obama again and again hoping things will change.
If he was expecting to have a bunch of Presidential campaign speeches in 2012 broadcast for free, either from the Oval Office or from Congress, he may need to rethink that in terms of how effective it would be, and figure on using his billion-dollar campaign kitty for his campaign ads (probably 95% attacking his Republican opponent and 5% taking credit for killing Osama bin Laden).
