We like Boothbay Harbor, though there are plenty of other spots along the Maine coast during the off-season.
What catches you is the quiet, once the tourists are gone, combined with the scenery. Face east and you have the rocky coast with scenic little harbors and "pocket" beaches. Turn west and there is the New England forest, which explodes with color in early October. And all of it is so thought-drivingly quiet.
(Potential guests might be amused to know there are leaf-peeping cruises up the rivers during the fall, then return to a tiny bed & breakfast for the night ... oh yeah!)
We native yankees (small Y), love our part of the country best during the autumn.
When I was there we visited friends in Newburypoint. He flies a Drifter light sport plane. ( a long rail with wings and a motor).
I sat out on the front rail and he flew me all over, up to the white mountains, along the Maine coast and all over in like early Oct.
WOW the colors from about three thousand feet to right above tree tops was spectacular.
BUT I’m a Florida boy and finally needed to get back to where it stays at least a little worm.
