Professors offer more than $10,000 for proof that Bachmanns story about HPV is true
By Chris Moody Political Reporter
Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann's story about a woman who claimed that her daughter suffered "mental retardation" after receiving a vaccine against HPV could fetch the woman's family thousands of dollars. But the family can only collect if Bachmann or the unnamed woman can prove the story is true.
Two bioethics professors have offered to pay more than $10,000 for medical records that prove the anecdote Bachmann told after Monday night's Republican presidential debate is true, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports:
Steven Miles, a U of M bioethics professor, said that he'll give $1,000 if the medical records of the woman from Bachmann's story are released and can be viewed by a medical professional.
His offer was upped by his former boss from the University of Minnesota, Art Caplan, who is now director of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics. Caplan said he would match Miles' challenge and offered $10,000 for proof of the HPV vaccine victim.
"'These types of messages in this climate have the capacity to do enormous public health harm,'" Miles said of why he made the offer. 'The woman, assuming she exists, put this claim into the public domain and it's an extremely serious claim and it deserves to be analyzed.'"
Bachmann told the story after she criticized opponent Texas Gov. Rick Perry for using an

Has Perry resigned yet?
If you are going to attack the pharma companies it needed to be with something more well-documented than this.
Bachmann blew it. This is the kind of junk the anti vaccination crowd says about all vaccinations. Charges made up by trial lawyers and Luddites.
Good. She’s far from fit for office.
As an immunology minor, I looked at the claims of guardisil. There were many claims of adverse reactions, up to death. This “professor” will just flat earth anyone who dares question his knowledge. Just another hater to be ignored. We have seen so called academics reject science before ala AGW. Keep fighting girl!
please read wiki...(Don't scream...the references are great sources.
I keep asking myself why Bachman is even being considered. Because she's a conservative?? That's just not enough!!
She never had a chance in the first place. Don’t get me wrong. I like a lot of what she has to say, but I’ve been following politics for quite a few decades. I don’t think she ever thought she could win. Same goes for Newt and Ron. And I don’t thing any of those three really thought they had a chance unless the rest of the pack was killed in a plane crash. But then there would have been Sarah.
Doctors will readily admit that drugs can had side effects.
Vincent Iannelli, M.D., writing on about.com -
“All medications can have side effects.
To highlight that point, some people say that if you read about all of the possible side effects of commonly used over-the-counter medicines, such as Tylenol or Motrin, then you would likely never take them.”

Anyone not trying to pump negative information about Bachmann would readily admit that drugs can have side effects. Especially since any legitimate doctor would also readily admit it.
There is an enormous amount of anecdotal evidence out there if you talk to your friends and neighbors.
The fact that Bachmann is cautious of big medicine and big pharma puts here squarely in the same camp as most Americans.
Just as people to post anecdotes of their medical horror stories and anything thinking person who reads that would think twice before blindly accepting anything and everything that big pharma wants to shove down our throat.
I have worked for a pharmaceutical sales organization. While pharmaceutical research yields many good results, I know firsthand that they way drugs are pushed in this country and it does the industry and America long-term harm when what amounts to garbage is pushed for profit with no concern for it’s effects.
Did you know - the “drug salesmen” are limited with how many times they legally can visit your doctor to harass them into prescribing more - and sales organizations track all interactions they have with individual doctors to be able to go right up to the max and not go over in cases where the doctor is not “prescribing enough” - which they also track.
Is that the best medicine for you ? I dunno, but take it !!!!!!!!!!! I want the stuff the big pharma rep is giving me and I want him to leave me alone !
It is impossible to prove because the phrase mental retardation cannot apply to the specific situation, even if it left the girl a mental vegetable.
The $10,000 is safe, even if the conversation can be proven to have happened.
There is Sarah anyway.
(But you’re right: only Mitt, Rick and Sarah have a chance at the nomination—or realistically ever did.)
You seem to have noticed the attempt to distract the sheeple from the real issue.
She didn’t/wouldn’t listen to what Gov. Perry had to say about it. She was focused on only one thing...trying to make Gov. Perry look bad. I respected her up to that point but felt she was over the top trying to attack one of her own on the stage and hammering it over and over. Whether we agree with how it was done by Gov Perry or not... he DID say he would have approached it differently and...there was an opt out option. As I said...agree or disagree is one thing but to pound and pound on it and not give him credit for saying he would do it differently and then leave out the fact there was an opt out option... well, it didn’t set well with me. Michele was over the top on that one and...if this story does not go away it will be her demise for her run for the nomination. It may blow over but if not...it’s over for her.
There’s a lot of negative on Bachmann here.
(now without getting all emotional or making over-generalizations, etc....)
Her words and actions in the House I have only ever seen to be actually, really in the best interest of small business. Not necessarily big business. But definitely small business.
Can anyone find any documentation on something she has said or done that would be bad for small business ?
Can anyone find any documentation on something she has said or done that would be show that she was helping big business so much so that it would - or possibly could be - detrimental for citizens, America, or small business ? (Again, not a generalization, but some specific quote of hers that we could debate).
Is this the only documented words or legislation of hers that we can quote that a) makes her against conservative principles or b) makes her against America or c) bad for America or d) not capable of being President ?
I don’t see how being overly cautious - if we want to say that she is in this case - about pills or vaccines being pushed by big pharma on American citizens who have the right to refuse to take any drug they want to (last I checked) puts her into any of the aforementioned a) through d) categories.
If there were concrete (calm) documented positions I’d be curious to see them.
It just does not sound like conservative American values when we say anyone who questions big pharma is automatically excluded as a conservative candidate.
IMHO...
These two are also offering $10,000 to anyone who can prove homosexuality is genetic. Oh, that’s right, they’re not offering for that. Doesn’t fit their political views.
so you can make any crazy claim you want because maybe just maybe it might be true? Sorry, but the burden of proof lies with MB
Speaking of college , how much $ for Obama’s college transcipts to be released?
