The union representing Southland grocery workers issued a 72-hour notice Thursday night canceling the grocery contract extension, paving the way for a strike.
"We returned to the bargaining table ready to compromise and make a deal that keeps our employers profitable but protects the jobs of our members," said a statement from the United Food and Commercial Workers, which represents workers at Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons.
"Instead, we got more of the same stonewalling from management. They are unwilling to compromise and are more concerned about hoarding their billions in profits than reaching a fair deal for their employees. We don't want to strike, but if they won't negotiate, we have no choice." ...
Under the most recent industry offer, workers would pay about $36 per month for individual health insurance, or $92 per month for family coverage.
A 141-day strike in 2003-04, which cost the stores an estimated $1.5 billion, led some customers to make long-term changes to their shopping habits by going to independent grocers and specialty outlets. Both sides agreed that they were hurt by the last strike.

This makes me mad as hell.
I shop at non-union stores. Screw these people.
What will the “buy my premade food 1 hour before my next meal” foodstamp crowd do?
Uhh - go hungry, then riot?
Great! Another opportunity to cross picket lines.
I did it last time at our local Albertson’s. I’ll do it again. Our local store is a community relations gem. It is forever supporting local groups, charities and non profits with their fund raisers.
Banana scanners making close to $30 an hour plus benefits. Since when did that become a “career”?
I predict that we will see more self-checkout lines in the future.
Good news for Stater Brothers?
The last strike in LA was a shopper’s heaven. No lines, no traffic, in and out. And, I loved arguing to the strikers outside Vons or Pavillions when they would start yelling at me. “Don’t you care about families?” “Yes, but I care about mine more”. And so on and so on. IIRC, the checkers make like $15.00 to $17.00/hour. Nice job for no education and illegal status.
Trader Joe’s loves strikes as well, I’m sure. Non union and already popular, the stores will be even more crowded when a strike occurs.
Can’t vouch for this but heard that Krogers is planning on closing Ralphs and re-opening under Krogers name with all new non union employees. Count me in as a loyal shopper if that happens.
Huh?? That’s a 7.25 hr job here in Mississippi.
when they are on strike, i will drive by real slow and yell, “ I’m gonna go in there and get your job”..... heads do explode, and it is fun... :)
Strikers are asking the public to help them raise the cost of doing business. Why in the world would I want my local supermarket to have to pay more for labor? Why would I want to put pressure on a store to raise prices? Sounds suicidal to me.
we buy 95% of our groceries from henry’s = sprouts.
some of our vitamins and paper products from costco.
some of our vitamins and cleaning supplies from walmart.
supermarkets are antiquated in my view.
Isn’t Sprouts (Henrys) a cool store. We always have a good shopping experience in the La Quinta store.
And the Fresh & Easy stores too.
I was there for the 2003-04 strike and got some screaming deals at the grocery store!
I remember a lady telling me, “but I decorated your birthday cakes!” I told her, “Hey, this is between you and your employer. I don’t ask you to insert yourself between our family and employer.” She responded, “Oh but I would!” and I told her “no thanks”. It was weird.
But like I said, there were great deals to be had to lure in customers. The strikers lost more than they gained in the long run. It was sad to see them exploited like they were.
yep.
the unions are pricing themselves out of business. (what’s new?)
buying habits are changing:
we don’t buy packaged and frozen poison foods that supermarkets sell in mass.
fire them all, then place a help wanted add for 1000’s of jobs in the paper and watch a line 10 miles long form to fill those jobs
