Germany, Italy at UN court over WWII compensation

By ARTHUR MAX, Associated Press – Sep 12, 2011

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Germany argued at the United Nations' highest court Monday that Italian courts have no right to order it to pay compensation to Nazi war victims, saying international law and peace treaties would be jeopardized if national courts had the power to override them.

Granting national courts jurisdiction over other countries would prompt would-be plaintiffs to "shop around for the most favorable national courts" and would lead to "legal disorder," said Germany's top legal adviser.

Germany says its sovereignty was violated when Italy's Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that an Italian civilian, Luigi Ferrini, was entitled to restitution for his deportation to Germany in 1944 to work as slave laborer in the armaments industry.

More reparations? Descendants owe for what ancestors did?

Everyone must have an ancestor who owes somebody something. How will all of these scores be settled if such a case is ever allowed to win?

By the way, speaking of the Greeks, Alexander must have accumulated a lot of potential plaintiffs during his military campaigns.

Lest we forget, Italy was allied with Nazi Germany. Pay your own damn compensation.

By 1944, Italy was officially on the side of the Allies, although much of the country was occupied by the Germans (who had rescued Mussolini and put him in charge of a puppet government).

A lot of nationalities suffered at the hands of Italy during their fascist years: Ethiopians, Albanians, Slovenes, Croats, Bosnians, Serbs, Montegrins, Greeks.
