Judge's blistering rebuke of two federal scientists stokes fires under Obama administration
Contra Costa Times ^ | 9/23/11 | Mike Taugher

With a House Republican loading political ammunition in a national fight over government science, Interior Department officials said Friday they would stand by the work of two scientists whose integrity was attacked recently by a federal judge overseeing the Delta water wars.

U.S. District Judge Oliver Wanger, in a lengthy and strongly worded assault Sept. 16, said the two scientists deliberately misled him when they urged him not to weaken new rules meant to help imperiled Delta smelt in wet years like this one.

He called one scientist, Jennifer Norris of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a "zealot" who is unwilling to change her opinion even in the face of changing facts and said she and Fred Feyrer of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation had acted in bad faith.

He was critical because he said a fish and water issue originally presented as a lost opportunity came back in a new hearing as an extinction issue.

"The only inference that the court can draw is that it is an attempt to mislead and to deceive the court into accepting what is not only not the best available science, it's not science. There is speculation," according to a preliminary transcript of his comments.

The comments, made just weeks before Wanger is scheduled to retire from the bench to return to private law practice, have led to at least one call for congressional hearings and could provide ammunition to opponents of the Obama administration's environmental policies.

Of course they will. And sooner or later the libtard “scientists” will win.

Until CW II.

We’ll be waiting for all of them.

Eventually, when the citizens of this country wake up and realize that they have been fed a pack of lies from junk science, I hope that those responsible are singled out. For special treatment.

Four dollar gasoline sucks.

The judge must be one of those “stupid’ anti-science people. He’s seen a lot and like anyone who has, he knows how leftards lie, cheat and steal for the cause.

Oh my gosh. Government scientists fudging facts to get the answer they wanted to begin with. Who would've thought that? I hope the climate researchers don't try to do-—oh wait....

. . . the two scientists deliberately misled [to keep in effect the] new rules meant to help imperiled Delta smelt. Government scientist "zealots" and their agency all acted in bad faith. It ain't sucker fish this time but it sounds like the same as what almost became Lexington Green West.

Sept. 11th, 2001 prevented it. That time.

This was July, 2001. It had gone on for months. Some farmers made an offer to the feds to "resolve a crisis that has roiled the Klamath Basin since the Bureau of Reclamation shut off irrigation water to the region to protect endangered fish. The offer follows a week of civil disobedience by angry farmers and their supporters who forced open the headgates at Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon three times to release water into the basin's canal system."

What? Scientists are expected to actually give a coherent account of their science? Woe are we! Another priesthood bites the dust.

There unfortunately are many low-integrity, sell-out scientists who are both zealots and crooks. They sell their souls for grant money and position. Pox on them.

Re the US Bureau of Reclamation: what do they do?

They either reclaim clams (I have no idea how that happens), or they re-clam clamming areas with new baby clams (i.e. seed an area with new clams).

On the other hand, perhaps I should just ‘clam’ up on the subject.

Why are my hands clammy?

What do you get if you mix a clam with a tomato? Clamato. You can drink it, not me.

Bless Judge Wanger. He is the only west coast judge I know of who recognizes that all the critter laws have to have a balanced copnsideration with how they affect the humn environment - economic and social impacts.

I am totally bummed that he is retiring

The US Bureau of Reclamation is the agency that has built and maintains large dams in the western United States. Their original goal was simple, to build dams that stored and provided irrigation water for cultivating otherwise nonarrable lands in the west that were too dry.

This expanded to make electricity...which is the best renewable energy resource we have.

For decades and decades they have done this.

But, the environmentalists have been doing two things over the last 30 years.:

1) Fighting them to try and get dams renmoved in the name of the endagnered species act. This hurts us agriculturally and energy wise.

and, 2) Infiltrating the Bureau to get their own scientist within the bureau to back up their desires with scientific "findings."

Sadly, they have been successful.

I fought the Bureau and the Federal government in 2001 before 911 at Klamath Oregon where bad science and viral environmentalist got a whole basin shut down by denying farmers irrigation water that they had rights to.

The Commissioner of the Bureau, Mr. Keyes (God rest his soul), favored the Farmers and was appointed by Bush and he took over as this was happening. After he came on board the junk science was thrown out and the crisis was ultimately resolved.

In 2003 I went to work for the Bureau working with digital technology to help dams communicate and employ Supervisory Data and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and communications and security systems for the dams. For the last 8 years I have seen how the Bush administration pushed back on those two agendas in the Bureau with some success...though Clinton had riddled all Federal agencies with career liberals. Now, Obama has doubled down on it all...and is producing even worse conditions like that in the San Joaquin.

This is one agency whose mission is one that actually allows it to make something productive and pay for itself. Now we have administrators, biologists and scientists working against those goals. But we fight it internally, and I continue to try and communicate externally wherever we cabn.

Anyhow, hope that helps. Dams like Hoover Dam, Grand Coulee, Arrowrock Dam, Anderson Dam, Palisades Dam and many, many more are operated and maintained by the US Bureau of Reclamation.

Good to see your still kicking Jeff.
Being in with those greenie nuts on the job,
it is a wonder you haven’t went postal.

I still have the Klamath money raising
water bucket for I won the bid on for
Michigan here in the gun shop.

I’ve come to the conclusion the green movement
is at root of about all the ills in this country,
whether related to water and farming, manufacturing,
the lack of a growing energy independence; and
the phony shortages, high unemployment,
and rampant inflation.

Keep up the good fight.Ed Hubel
