Co-pilot error almost caused ANA plane to turn upside down

National Sep. 29, 2011 - 04:00PM JST ( 67 )

TOKYO —

An All Nippon Airways plane narrowly avoided disaster earlier this month when it plunged over the Pacific, almost turning upside down, the transport ministry said on Wednesday.

The All Nippon Airways (ANA) flight, with 117 passengers and crew on board, dived 1,900 meters in 30 seconds in the incident off the southern Shizuoka district on Sept 6.

The maneuver happened when the co-pilot, in trying to unlock the cockpit door for the captain who was returning from the toilet, mistook a command button for the cockpit door lock switch nearby.

The plane, which took off from Naha in Okinawa in the south, later managed to touch down at Tokyo’s Haneda airport safely.

Two crew members were slightly injured, while four passengers reported health problems following the incident.

I think most people would have 'health problems' after that. Fortunately, those problems could be easily taken care of by a change of clothes and a shower.

He should have turned it into a 1G barrel roll!

“...mistook a command button for the cockpit door lock switch nearby.”

And I thought that backspace being too close to enter in standard keyboards was troublesome...

seems hard to believe you would design a plane with a button that if pushed makes it dive and turn upside down, at least without some kind of interlock that asks “are you really sure you want to dive and turn upside down now”

I thought the same thing. What is the point of that command, missile avoidance?

Command button?! To do what? Self destruct?!

That.....was amazing. I’ve known of Hoover for many years but had never seen that video. To any who have never actually flown an aircraft....you’re witnessing some insane skills there.

I had a bad dream about a plane going into a nosedive and then flipping forward.

Bob Hoover: escaped from german POW camp and stole a FW 109 and flew it to allied territory.

Say what? Thats a movie there, sort of like real life Foxfire.

Why would they put a button like that outside the cockpit?

seems hard to believe...

Sounds fishy. A door lock release button right next to the "please do an inverted dive" button? Not sure I buy it.

That would have been bad. There are some really attractive flight attendants on ANA. :)

It’s inside the cockpit. The co-pilot was trying to let the captain back in the cockpit.

See the two knobs at the rear of the center console to the right of the plastic cup? The large one is the rudder trim. The small one right behind it is the cabin door lock knob.

Easy mistake. Poor placement/design for the door control.

Something about this story doesn’t make sense.

Sort of like the cause of last year’s stock-market “flash crash” being attributed initially to a broker inadvertently typing in an order quantity as “billion” rather than “million”.

Autopilot controls are generally on the yoke.

I would think the “door unlock” button would be near the door.

That guy is incredible.

Sometime, check out: Bob Hoover video in which he pours tea while performing a barrel roll (Note: takes a couple of minutes to download)
