A job is becoming a dim memory for many unemployed

WASHINGTON (AP) -- For more Americans, being out of work has become a semi-permanent condition.

Nearly one-third of the unemployed - nearly 4.5 million people - have had no job for a year or more. That's a record high. Many are older workers who have found it especially hard to find jobs.

And economists say their prospects won't brighten much even after the economy starts to strengthen and hiring picks up. Even if they can find a job, it will likely pay far less than their old ones did.

The outlook is unlikely to improve on Friday, when the government issues its monthly jobs report. Economists predict it will show that employers added a net 56,000 jobs in September.

That's far fewer than needed to reduce unemployment. The unemployment rate is expected to remain 9.1 percent for a third straight month.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke last week called long-term unemployment a "national crisis" and said it should be one of Congress' top priorities.

People’s marketable skills degrade when they sit home on their ass? Who woulda guessed?

Clearly we need to extend unemployment another 100 weeks or so.

In the last 52 weeks, 1.6 million Americans fell off the back end of extended unemployment benefits. There is about 140 million American workers according to the BLS.

Widely heard expectations of another 1.25 to 1.5 Million Americans falling off the back end of the extended unemployment benefits in the next 52 weeks.

That is over 2% of the American workforce.

That’s a lot of people.

Herman Cain, bless his industrious soul, will have missed the point if he stops with blaming the unemployed and fails to address governmental factors that needlessly hobble wealth creation in America, that make it harder for jobs to appear.

Are You Tired of Economy-Killing U.S. Energy Policy? Sign the APPROVE KEYSTONE PIPELINE petition at http://www.FuelingJobs.com TODAY!

The Keystone Pipeline will bring hundreds of thousands of jobs, billions to our economy and help reduce dependence on Middle East Oil.
But radical Greens are waging a last-minute “War on Energy” to KILL the environmentally-friendly Keystone Pipeline Project which would allow America to tap into Northwest American vast oil fields.

I know it’s really hard to find a job, so I don’t want to sound unsympathetic. But seriously, if you’ve gone years without any job, I think there’s got to be something wrong besides the economy.

I got out of college in 1980, at the height of the Carter disaster, with a fistful of academic honors and no jobs at all in my field. So I worked two jobs, one as a record store clerk, both minimum wage, until things improved. At other times, I’ve been laid off with no notice, but I took whatever job I could land to bring in a paycheck, even if it was just stocking shelves. I’ve only collected unemployment once in my life, when I was in the middle of a move and had no other choice, but I got off it as soon as humanly possible. I don’t even know how people can live on it. It was only about $217 a week when I got it.

You have to get out there and work, even if it’s not what you want. There shouldn’t be any such thing as a job that’s beneath you. Just working at anything is bettter for your self-esteem than taking a handout. Plus you’ll be a lot more likely to get promoted to something better if you’re out in the world than if you’re sitting home in your bathrobe. Unless your ideal job is “blogger.”

The bigger challenge is to find an employer who doesn’t think you are “above” the humble shelf stocking or whatever. And how honest are you going to be? From a Machiavellian point of view, it’s probably not a good idea to let them know you’ve got a college degree, etc.

When you can unequivically guarantee me the aquifer under that pipeline will never be contaminated from a leak or terrorism- I will sign the petition. There is NO way to clean up the groundwater once it has contaminants in it. There are other routes besides across that huge water source.

things do get a little trickier as you get older. Like, many people just don’t want to hire you. You must get your head around that fact.

Pristine water and skies do little good when your family is starving to death out in the cold. America is just one week away from all hell breaking irrevocably loose when the trucks stop.
