U.S. Ties Iran to Plot to Kill Saudi Envoy (DC bomb plot)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 10/11/2011 | EVAN PEREZ

WASHINGTON—U.S. authorities said Tuesday they had charged two men in an Iranian-directed plot to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the U.S.

The alleged assassination plot would represent an escalation in the confrontation between mostly Shiite Iran and mostly Sunni Saudi Arabia, two longtime Middle East rivals. The charges are also a rare instance of Washington accusing Iranian groups of fomenting terrorism on U.S. soil.

Elements of the Iranian government were ready to spend $1.5 million to hire what they believed was a drug-cartel hit squad from Mexico, said U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

Prosecutors filed several criminal charges against Manssor Arbabsiar, a 56-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen who holds Iranian and U.S. passports, and Gholam Shakuri, described as a member of a special-operations unit of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Mr. Holder said Mr. Arbabsiar and his Iran-based co-conspirators had been plotting to assassinate the Saudi ambassador since the spring.

They were stringing these guys along for a while, and Holder decided that today would be a really good day to announce the bust.

One problem: while it takes some attention off Fast and Furious, now Obama has to respond to an open and explicit act of war by the government of Iran upon United States soil.

Obama has tried sanctions, to no avail. Perhaps “double secret probation” is the next move. Or, maybe Barack should just wait until Iran’s nuclear war-making capability is a fait accompli.

Obama's response will be "Slow and Marginally Annoyed!"

Unless the Mexican hit squad was armed with F n F weapons, and assuming they could ever make it past our borders (an Obama/Holder?Napolitano TwoFer?).

Since it involved a planned attack on the Saudi and Israeli embasies, the U.S. could simply stand back and allow those entities to take care of their business with Iran. Take off the shakles that is preventing them from defending their land.

It was an act of war - but more specifically against those countries.

The only recourse I see from the Nobama bunch is a strongly worded letter signed by Reid, Boehner and Bama.

Washington's been dead for 200 years.

The president is Obama, and his Administration is accusing the Iranian government of planning to put bombs in our nation's capital.

The response is up to Obama now. Not Washington.

Convenient, how Holder is trying to divert attention away from Fast and Furious as he tries to make himself look like a responsible Atty General.

BTW, how were the Iranians able to plot an assassination attack in our country? Seems like they aren’t afraid of obama.

so, I wonder if the press will accuse Biden of jumping in a SR71 and flying to Iran and making a deal to divert attention away from Obama’s horrible record? Since there is no evidence, we must dig deeper.

AdminJhihD (Hitler in a Turban) and the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps must be glad that G.W. is no longer President, because else-wise they might be getting Hiroshima and Nagasaki repeated on Tehran and Quam else-wise.

Oh, very convenient.

Issa was supposed to issue a subpoena to Holder, so Holder makes this announcement about a guy who was arrested Sept. 29, with not a word being issued about the arrest at the time. Then Fast and Furious heated up, Holder announces the arrest, and suddenly everything else is off the front page.

The Saudi intelligence guys undoubtedly did the uncovering work. Obama had no choice but to make the arrest and claim the credit.

Hmmmmm. Seems I've heard this expression before:

"To 'wag the dog' means to purposely divert attention from what would otherwise be of greater importance, to something else of lesser significance. By doing so, the lesser-significant event is catapulted into the limelight, drowning proper attention to what was originally the more important issue.

The expression comes from the saying that 'a dog is smarter than its tail', but if the tail were smarter, then the tail would 'wag the dog'."
