In spotlight, Herman Cain survives Attacks

Herman Cain woke up Tuesday to another day of soaring polling numbers, showing him moving into second place behind Mitt Romney and pushing Rick Perry out of the spotlight.

The day ended with the former Godfather’s Pizza CEO under attack from his rivals, both on stage and in a series of post-debate press releases meant to tear him down.

But from his new center-stage spot next to Mitt Romney, Cain calmly weathered every jab from them, the moderators and even the Democrats, walking out from the Dartmouth auditorium having done little to hurt his standing.

“The 999 tax plan is a political disaster.”

That depends on how many Americans are willing to actually sacrifice a bit to save their country. I hope sufficient numbers are smart enough to realize the prosperity and beneficial side effects this would bring in the long run would more than make up for any temporary pain...

The true leeches are a lost cause anyhow.

What I really want is for Cain and his staff to issue on his website, a Q&A on his 9-9-9 plan IN RESPONSE TO CRITICS ( many of them existing here in the FR forum ).

There are so many issues left unanswered which a 30 second response cannot do justice to.

For instance:

1) How does it affect the life of a low income at or below or even a little above poverty level wage earner?

He ought to put some good a solid sample tax calculations on his website for people like these.

2) How will it affect the total price of goods and services?

3) How will it affect small businesses, will it make it more expensive or less expensive for them to do business?

4) It adds a new tax, which is a temptation to congress to turn it into a complicated pile of dung.

NOTE: Cain’s answer to #4 above was three-fold : A) A 2/3 majority will be required to increase any of the above number ‘9’; B) It won’t happen as long as he’s president; C) The vigilance of the people will ensure that this won’t happen.

Many still have their reservations ( as Bachmann said last night, if you turn the ‘9’ around the devil is in the details ). Firstly, Cain won’t be president forever, so any future Congress can monkey around with it after he’s gone. secondly, the 2/3 clause can be waived by a future Democrat Congress. I guess that leaves our vigilance as the last line of defense.

If Cain does not do it, his plan ( especially the federal sales tax portion ) will be attacked. Ric Santorum already tested this last night when he asked the people of New Hampshire if anyone of them want a sales tax ( no one raised their hands ).

west texas land is worthless, you can buy it to this day for about $1 per acre, I know because my family owned a 10,000 ranch in west texas.

It’s basically rocky desert.

“Cain’s not selling 9-9-9. It’s DOA and will never pass either House. What he is selling is the Big Idea - radical tax reform.”

Exactly. I have a suspicion that was the *sole* reason he ran and that he never expected to be a front runner. No matter who gets elected, this issue is now in the forefront and cannot be ignored. RINOmney will be forced to address it with something more than a 57 point tweak of the current, broken system.

He’s the only person running that has a large amount of enthusiastic supporters behind him. Anybody want Romney? Besides liberal and the inside the beltway crowd?

Anybody want Perry except a few here on FR that seem to think that Texas automatically equals conservative?

Newt would be great and I’d vote for him if I thought it would do any damned good at all. Of the top three, the only one that causes any excitement is Cain.

RE: Cain/Gingrich would be awesome

You realize they’re both GEORGIANS and the 12th Amendment will make this combo impossible.

I totally agree with the Christine O’Donnell and Sharon Angel analogy here. The RED MEAT crowds got their wish and nominated these two but at the end they lost badly in two states that we were supposed to win if we nominated someone else. The RED MEAT crowd can pull this disaster again with Cain but this time it would be a far worst electoral defeat because it is on a national level and if they cannot get to nominate Cain they will certainly and indirectly get us Romney because he will be the winner of all this and Romney is also an assured loser against Obama.

He is the ONLY person on that stage I would like to see advance
Cain/Gingrich would be awesome
Sarah Palin as Energy Secretary
Ann Coulter as Press Secretary.
Thomas Sowell: Economics
Walter Williams: Education
Ted Nugent- Sec. of Defense.

That lineup is super. I was thinking how great Sowell and Williams would fit in a Cain administration. Walter is 75 and probably Sowell the same so I don’t think it would happen..

Nugent is a great idea at Defense.

I saw Herman on Greta last night after the debate and he seemed so subdued that it bothered me. Maybe he was just tired but there weren’t any smiles or jokes. Didn’t see the debate so I have no idea if he was displeased with that.

FWIW, Sowell is older than Williams.

Did you actually read the linked article? While the opening paragraph mentions that Cain came out of last night’s debate undamaged, the rest of the article goes on to disparage his campaign.

Since you are so good at predicting the future, can you tell me what tonight’s lottery numbers are?

Seems the same predictions were made about the 65 Tea Party candidates last election. No Chance.

Pray for America

We all must note that the LEFT COAST stayed uniformly Democrat ~ which is a long term problem we will probably need to address with re-education camps, or maybe cut off their water or something

That’s ok, I’ve got a well...go nuts.

It was very telling to listen to the reports outside discussing “income redistribution”.

Are you referring to the empowerment zones in Cain's 999 plan? If so, I'm glad to see some of the media is at least shedding light on that now.

“You don’t foresee large corporations bringing back ALL of their foreign revenue when they realize they don’t have to pay taxes on it?”

Having worked as a tax consultant for Big 4, I can guarantee you they will onshore revenue, and fast. Cain has been in these discussions in the corporate world and he knows darn well that our tax code is part of what is killing us.

The problem is that most “conservatives,” even here on FR, will be upset if the “poor” actually have to pay *any* tax whatsoever. Right now, if you don’t have a job, you get income tax “refunds” and the only tax you pay are state and local sales and use taxes. Yeah, those people are going to lose. Those people are going to vote Obama anyway.

Some who work and who pay *very* little in income tax will pay more. It’s about making taxes more fair across the board. If some freepers and the American people are too stupid to understand that this is why our system stinks, then they deserve the crappy system we have. The rest of us need to get off our bums and stop letting idiots, bums and the corrupt run our tax and economic system.

“I implore you to think through the notion that your staying home on election day is a good idea.”

The vast majority of FR will vote for the eventual nominee, no matter who it is and no matter what they say now. You’ve been here long enough to remember the last election and all of the declarations that “I will never vote for McCain.”

The site went for McCain in large numbers. They will say the same crap about Romney et al right up until election day. When someone with some pull posts a vanity that if you don’t vote for Romney, you aren’t a patriot or some such drivel.

For the record, I did not vote for McCain in 08, I hate that man. I will vote for the eventual nominee in 2012. What’s different this time? Obama. I didn’t think it would be this bad. I didn’t think it COULD be this bad. If you cannot bring yourself to vote against Obama....wow. What kind of selfish bullsquat is that?

Imagine Obama without the worry of re-election and a democrat House and Senate again. It could happen if you stay home.

Bingo! Texas your post #23 nails it.

I agree 100%. It’s unfortunate but true. The conservatives will give the nomination to the establishment candidate.

I will admit, I was disappointed with Cain last night. Perry is done. Today, my favorite is Newt. Tomorrow, could be someone else. One thing is for sure, ANYONE BUT OBAMA. There isn’t a single one of them that is 1/100th as bad as the Marxist Kenyan. I will not sit home and I will vote for whoever the polls show has the best chance of beating that low life, Alinsky loving, Marxist, closet Muslim and homo, jug eared, string bean, community organizer. I WANT HIM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t care about Newts past, he won’t be a sissy boy like McCain. He will go after the Kenyan.
