Fundraising figures released over the weekend demonstrate that only two Republican candidates -- Mitt Romney and Rick Perry -- enter the dash to the nomination with both the financial support and the campaign infrastructure that equip them fully to compete.
And the Obama campaign -- eager to ensure that no candidates get free rides in the primaries -- has already begun making assumptions about whom President Obama is likely to face in the general election. That means Romney is coming under pressure from both sides, even as he seeks to consolidate Republican support early in the process.
Before we get there, Romney and Perry remain the frontrunners for the nomination. One of them remains overwhelmingly likely to secure the GOP nod.
The other candidates -- led by Herman Cain, whose burst in the polls has been the story of the last week -- have nowhere near the combination of fundraising muscle and on-the-ground activists that Perry and Romney have.

Well their money hasn’t been too effective yet. Cain’s on top, one is on life-support, and the other is stagnant. Forgive us if we have trouble seeing why Cain must lose.
The GOP establishment has decided that Republican primary voters are lazy, bitch too much and are too demanding.
That's why this year, illegal foreign nationals will be brought in to do the voting for the establishment candidates that American Republican primary voters refuse to do.
You know it cost Romney alot to pay all the debaters to hang around.
You don’t use that money during this “polling” period, you save it for right in front of each primary. That’s why Perry is still sitting on 15 million...he’s going to flood markets, especially SC and Florida.
You don't speak for the Tea Party...I know a lot of Tea Party members who are voting for Perry.

Right. I guess that's why Romney spent more money per vote than any other candidate, yet never came close to winning in 2008, and is spending more than any candidate this time around, yet his numbers are flat-lining.
Not to mention that your man Perry has spent a lot and his numbers have nose-dived.

Oh, you mean the 34% that are for Cain in Florida (versus 28% for Romney and 5% for Perry). Sorry, but they’ve ALREADY been polled. And the ones that support Cain are rock-solid in his camp (i.e., Tea Party).
And Meg Whitman would be governor of California.

I suspect that the Tea Party candidates in 2010 averaged about 10% of what their “establishment” opponents had in the bank. Sometimes money simply DOES NOT BUY VOTES.

State-wide races are a different animal than nation-wide. It takes a lot of cash and presence in far-flung states, if, of course, you really intend to compete. If not, you can run a low-budget campaign, try to deliver a message, and vie for a VP slot.
If money were votes, The Donald would be the nominee right now.
Uh, he polled well, then crashed once everyone figured out he wasn’t a serious candidate. Same as Cain is going to do.
I liked Perry until I started reading the posts of his supporters. Now I can’t stand the man. your vitriol has driven me away.
