You’d think Greece would be an excellent farming area, if nothing else. But I haven’t seen Greek anything in the grocery except olives and olive oil.

You guessed wrong. Greece is rather poor farmland. That’s why the ancient Greeks were big on homosexuality. They utilized it as a form of birth control since the country had neither the room or the agricultural capacity to support a large population.

They built colonies all over the Mediterranean to remedy overpopulation.

I've a customer that is a Greek immigrant (now a US citizen). He told me of a government "jobs" program in Greece.

The project was in the fifties (and is not yet complete), to build a road from one metropolitan are to another. Anyone could show up any time they chose, no heavy machinery was used, the government would supply picks, shovels and wheelbarrows. The supervisors could not "tell" anyone what to do, as long as the "laborers" looked busy they got a check.

And here we are, an incomplete road and a population that expects something for nothing.

It is ,, riding a tour bus from port to inland ruins locations recently, there was all kinds of tilled land visible and such and quite a few different crops are grown there.

Most of it is consumed locally and in Europe.. except for olive oil. :-)
