On CNN’s Newsroom this afternoon, anchor Brooke Baldwin observed that at last night’s GOP debate, Rick Perry kept referring to fellow candidate Herman Cain as “brother.” “Did you notice that while you were watching?” Baldwin asked her audience, replaying Perry’s comments.
PERRY: “Herman, I love you, brother, but let me tell you something, you don’t need to have a big analysis to figure this thing out…At the end of the week, I’m going to be laying out a plan that clearly — I’ll bump plans with you, brother, and we’ll see who has the best idea about how you get this country working again.”
I counted two there. Seriously! Let me know,” Baldwin exclaimed. “And here is what a Perry spokesperson said, ‘He is a friendly fellow. He uses that kind of language. And he views all those folks on stage as colleagues, as fellow Republicans and he speaks accordingly.’”
Baldwin questioned CNN political correspondent Mark Preston over Perry’s use of the term.
“As I was watching last night, I definitely made note of that,” Baldwin said. “And I’m sure you did as well.”
“Sure, it’s certainly something the Perry campaign does not want to be talking about right now,” responded Preston. “They want to talk about what they think was a very strong performance for the Texas Governor. We have to be very careful not to characterize what he was saying. They are saying that he meant nothing by that and in fact he’s not racist and what have you. It would be interesting to see what happens if Herman Cain is asked that question and if Herman Cain decides that he doesn’t have a problem with it, then I do think the issue is dead, Brooke.”

I think it was Perry’s way of saying to Cain - even though I’m criticizing your plan - I still think of you as a friend. I noticed he did not use the term when he criticized Romney. He was out for blood with Mitt.
Did ya notice Perry didn't call Newt, "Brother". I guess that only works with black folk.
I'm surprise he didn't start talking jive, like the stewardess on that airplane movie.
Because he could not remember his name. To many letters.
I suppose it’s possible that Perry feels self conscious over “N****rhead” and that that self-consciousness impelled him to be extra affectionate toward the sole black candidate. I doubt was just a coincidence that Perry called Cain and none of the other candidates “brother.”

It was a dumb move on Perry’s part no matter how he meant it. I noticed it straight away and it sounded condescending and was a real turn off imho. I thought Perry did terrible last night and every other night he has been in a debate. I say this as someone who came out early on FR to declare that I would be voting for him if Sarah didn’t run too. I am looking at others in the field now. I am not sure Perry or his handlers are ready for prime time.
That CNN has to ask that question, shows how out of touch and non-Christian the CNN folk are.
Options:
1. Perry is a racist pig who is stuck in 60’s lingo and wants to cater to the black vote
2. Perry is treating a fellow brother in Christ with respect.
3. Perry thinks he and Cain have same mother.

That’s because it’s been so effective in shutting down any argument they might have to address concerning their ideology.
They’re currently trying to elevate homos to the same level.
They are either intellectually lazy, or they know that their ideology cannot be defended. That’s why they lean on these “arguments instead of arguments” like “racism” or “homophobia”.
Well, Newt’s Catholic, y’know. Perry might not regard Catholics as brothers.

Not at all. I don’t like Perry, but I have to side with him on this. As long as we are human, we are the black man’s brothers and sisters. And I resent the implication that we are not.
I use the term “Brother” all the time when talking to family, friends and neighbors (regardless of their skin color). And if I’m speaking Spanish to somebody, I call them “hermano”.
No big deal. They all understand it is a term of endearment and not an insult.
But with regards to Rick Perry referring to Cain as “brother”, perhaps he was attempting to get a negative reaction from him. Perry’s slumping in the polls while Cain is rising fast. I suspect Perry was attempting to get a visceral reaction out of Cain, such as “I resent that remark”, in an attempt to make Cain look like another self-entitled, victimhood-class imposter.
If so, it didn’t work. Cain looks to me to be the real deal.
Newt? Romney?
I do not believe that Perry mean’t anything by that other than, “Herman, I like you enough to call you my brother.”
This is a silly non-issue.
