Republican frontrunner Herman Cain, who has built his support among party activists with his anti-tax message and controversial 9-9-9 tax plan, has called the IRS an "overseer" and compared taxation to slavery.
"Our tax code is the 21st century version of slavery," says Cain in a recent campaign video. "In a Herman Cain administration, April 15 will no longer be a day to be dreaded."
Perhaps some of Cain's anti-tax fervor can be traced to his own past encounters with the taxman. According to documents obtained by ABC News, in February 2008, the Georgia Department of Revenue hit Cain and his wife Gloria with a lien for $8558.46 in unpaid personal income taxes from 2006.

My “anti-tax fervor” is more than an intellectual exercise. The not-so-great state of Illinois has tried to collect taxes that were not owed several times.
I never got a lien because I went to my accountant ASAP. Of course, he sent me a bill after telling these “idiots” (his words as a liberal Democrat) they did not understand their own tax code.
I am sure he had more important business on his mind.
BTW, IRS has little compassion ~ provided you file the right forms ~ but I question the ambitions of the tax collector in this one. There's a pretty good death rate among the taxpayers with this problem so the odds were decent that the government would collect more than the amount of this lien if they simply waited for probate.

Just an argument over how much he owed and the IRS uses whatever tool they have to intimidate or enforce payment.
The IRS didn’t take his personal prpoerty which they very well can do.

Anyone who has owned anything or does real business with states, counties, cities etc has these problems.
ESPECIALLY, on payroll taxes. I have had the auto letters sent to me at least 10 times from my DS state on owing the ripoff UTI state tax in spite of quarterly filings showing ZERO payroll paid.
Forget California on WC, an employer is raped at will with this one.
The problem is the state doing the lien even with Cain filing an official notice for extension...It is FU and live with our systems.
