Study: New grads prefer Facebook access to higher salary

New grads are facing the highest unemployment rate that they've ever had to deal with. It's no wonder we are hearing cries on the subject from the early 20's crowd, including many protesters down at Occupy Wall Street. A new study, though, could raise some eyebrows over their priorities when it comes to careers.

--SNIP--

About 56 percent of the 2,800 students and young professionals polled across the globe are so turned off by the idea of logging out that they would most likely turn down or ignore a job offer from a company that banned those social networking sites.

The ability to work remotely also proved more important than pay. About 40 percent said they would actually accept less money if it meant they could telecommute and use social networking sites on whatever device they want while working. A flexible work schedule was another plus -- about one-third of respondents said it is their right, not privilege, to have flexible hours and permission to work remotely.

Actual title: "Study: New grads prefer Facebook access to higher salary"

I think I'm starting to understand the mentality of these OWS people a little better.

Do they also expect free lattes and pizza?

My current job allows me access to social media as long as I get my work done properly and if it didn’t I would probably change jobs.

And if it came down to it, I would be willing to sacrifice salary for that type of freedom in terms of a job offer.

Of course, I’ve got this freedom after forty years in the workforce.

Have you noticed how many wireless device commercials lovingly feature slackers doing non-work-related activities in a work setting??

I don’t know about this. I’d be surprised to see someone - anyone - turn down a job because they banned Facebook....This reeks of “sounds great but wouldn’t happen in practice”

How are they planning to pay for their social media devices/access when they don’t have jobs?

Sounds like they just want someone to pay them to do whatever the hell they feel like.

I’m not sure of the details, but their plan apparently involves catching tuberculosis in a homeless shelter in Atlanta.

astounding but we only have to look at the idiots who rioted last night at the college not because they want justice for the little boys who were raped at their school for years , no they are upset and rioted because their coach got fired .
Then we see the smelly wasting flea ridden fools at these demo’s.

I got rid of my FB due to the fools who think I and others are interested in their daily life like should they wash the car, their nail got broke, should they watch the movie or x factor.

social media has become a tool for the folks who think the world evolves around them and like to tell everyone about their min by min lives.

Makes one wonder how the most identifyable dysfunctional group of all, overpaid public employees at all levels, actually live the controversy.
based on my own observation of city, county and utility employees, about a third which can be seen in public are talking on cell phones or texting. No, I do not believe it is all work related.

In the office it must be much worse, since the incompetent get "step raises" and "longevity raises" regardless of performance. There should be an anonymous study of department supervisors who consider this total waste of time as a priority.

I know from experience that at least a third (and perhaps up to half) of public government city, county and state employees are deadwood. In private companies, that class of employee becomes unemployed and unemployable immediately. Where do you suppose they go? (up to now)

That's no longer possible since virtually all cell phones are texting-capable and most internet and facebook enabled.

Try to control that!
As an employer, for me it would be three strikes and you're gone. "Going postal" would take on a whole new meaning (Going Textual?).

They’re addicted to Facebook. I’m not kidding. I see it at work all the time. I can go all day and not even check my personal email. The 26 year old down the hall from me literally cannot go more than a few minutes without texting, calling on his cell phone (I mean personal calls), or checking Facebook. He’s a great guy, but I have no idea how he gets anything done with all those distractions.

No room in their lives for old fashion companies that expect them to actually work and accomplish something of value in return for their pay.

They think the real world is like a “Friends” melodrama.

The irony of the youngest refusing a job where the employer bans facebook on work computers - is that many if not most can access it through their smart phones and certainly at home. They’re demanding to use the work computers for their personal life for free, instead of risking paying for data plan rates to update their Twitter feeds and facebook status.

I'll take the higher salary, thanks. I hate facebook.

A flexible work schedule was another plus -- about one-third of respondents said it is their right, not privilege, to have flexible hours and permission to work remotely.

Do the respondents own their own business? If not, TS unless you are SO good that you can get it in your contract.

I have my own business. I have flexible hours and I sometimes work remotely. My hours are whatever hours needed to get my work finished in a time acceptable to my customers.

The way many of them do now, and have done for years. Entitlement. Welfare. "Safety net." Obama stash.

Turds by any other name...

This is just amazing...or maybe not, considering who’s out “occupying”. I can use social media any time I want, but I treat it like a social disease

I’m betting the average Chinese, Korea, Filipino or Japanese worker doesn’t have this attitude.
