Parker doctor rushed in after Reno air crash: Dr. Jonathan Apfelbaum recounts story
Castle Rock News Press (Colorado) ^ | November 19, 2011 | Chris Michlewicz

...Bodies were strewn everywhere. Those who were unharmed scrambled in panic as the public address announcer attempted to calm them. That’s when Apfelbaum’s natural instinct kicked in. As an E.R. doc, Apfelbaum has seen his share of carnage. He has been among the first responders to air disasters that left no survivors. However, the aftermath of the Reno crash was unlike anything he had ever seen.

Knowing that the available EMS crews would be overwhelmed, he hugged Julia, leapt over a fence and hitched a ride on a cart to get to the scene faster...

But Apfelbaum believes the accident will shut the races down for good.

I hope he is wrong on this.

Good job, Doctor!

I hope he is wrong, too. We attended in 2010, and there is nothing else like it.

There is no substitute for regularly having mass casualty drills to be prepared for the worst. I vividly remember the United Airlines DC-10 crash at Sioux City, IA in the 1989. The local EMS agency had practiced a plane crash scenario shortly before and was unbelievably prepared for what happened. I was an ambulance medic in a Des Moines, IA suburb at the time and the flight was initially to be diverted to the Des Moines airport. I know that Sioux City was far better prepared for what happened.

My first was 1969. I remember Bob Hoover as the in flight race starter, and one Liberace in his furs and Rolls Royce was the event Grand Marshal. I don’t remember any of the racers. I do remember that it was an unforgettable event.

My feeling is there will be some adjustment of crowd to race area, but hopefully the races will continue. As is stated this could have been a much worse accident than it was. We can be thankful that circumstances limited to a degree the carnage.

I first went in 1971...my dad drove me over to Reno.

I have attended every year since 1990. It will make September extremely empty for me and my friends if the races are canceled.

I have 2 coworkers who were among the injured. One is already back at work (part time), though he lost a leg and hasn't been fitted with a prosthetic leg yet. His wife, brother, and father all lost legs as well, though his brother hasn't been able to get back to work yet. Unfortunately, their mother was killed instantly.

All have remarkably good outlooks and their spirits are high.

Oh my..the whole family lost legs! Can’t imagine dealing with that...wow..just wow.

I’ve heard concerns the sport may no longer be...but this could have also happened in car racing had a car left the track. MAybe some tweaking on seating but Ihope they continue with these races.

What is the feeling in Nevada about whether the races will go on? My husband would love to attend again. The finals were cancelled when we went because of high winds.

The fans and most of Reno would like them to continue.

It’ll be up to NTSB, FAA, event insurers and lawyers. Probably won’t be know until early summer.

As far as the racing classes and event organizers are concerned, they are acting as if it’s a go because it’s easier to shut everything down as you are getting ready than it is to ramp up on a very short notice.
