Is Mexico Economy Really Driving Down Illegal Immigration To The US?[MexGov PovertyMonitor Buck NYT]

A big drop in illegal immigration seems to be taking place along the US-Mexico border. Some attribute this to rising prosperity in Mexico, but other more influential factors are in play.

According to a 2010 Department of Homeland Security report, the number of undocumented immigrants living in the US declined from 11.6 million in 2008 to 10.6 million in 2009, the largest decrease in 30 years. One of the most common explanations for this phenomenon is that Mexico has witnessed the emergence of a middle class, lessening the economic incentive to cross the border.

While it is true that a segment of the population has seen a growth in disposable income over the past five years, a July study by consulting firm De la Riva Group revealed that only 32 percent of the country is “middle class,” defined as making the equivalent of between 13,500 pesos ($1,000) and 98,499 pesos ($7,360) per month...

In contrast, the latest poverty statistics from Mexico’s government poverty monitor CONEVAL indicate that the number of people living below the poverty line in Mexico (2,114 pesos or $158 per month in urban areas, 1,329 pesos or $99 per month in the countryside) increased by 3.2 million between 2008 and 2010, and now stands at 52 million. This figure amounts to more than 46 percent of the country's 112 million inhabitants. This directly contradicts optimistic accounts in the US media which imply that increasing standards of living in Mexico are causing immigration to fall, such as recent articles in the Sacramento Bee ...

Yeah right. They would ather go back to drug cartel infested Mexico than stay in the US. What has really happened is that states like Alabama and Georgia are cracking down on the employment of illegals. ...Now if only California and Florida would do the same

Maybe just me.. but I call shenanigans. Our county has more and more.. literally each day. Could they be moving to my sanctuary hell hole from other states? Sure. Could the numbers be manipulated to show what a great job O’s administration has done to curb illegal immigration? Sure.

And where did the other ~ 30 million illegals go?

I guess the 16 illegals captured on the beach below our house were just trying to get in their boat to leave the US.
Judging by two boat smuggling cases in one week near here..they must still be getting a lot of boats in and out without a problem.

they base their assumptions that crossing have gone down on the fact that apprehensions are down...

um... just because Obama isn’t trying to catch them doesn’t mean they are not still coming. By that reasoning ... we could stop all illegal immigrants from crossing just by firing all of our border patrol officers.

Yes... I guess if you stop catching them then the numbers go down. Don’t know about your neck of the woods.. but there are more of them here.

The harder it is to get EBT, money, housing for free in the USA, the more they will stay home.

Many have been here for so long raising families, that it is home to them now. An American may move from Texas to Maine, he visits the first but calls the latter his home away from home. Visits now and then.

So, because the problem of illegal immigration into the US has been practically solved, there is little or no reason to delay any longer in passing comprehensive amnesty for those already here.

That’s always one of the hidden agendas for articles such as this.

I have many Mexican friends who immigrated here. All are now legal.

They are scared to death of visiting Mexico.

Hispanic TV has aired specials showing the evidence that the Zetas and others have murdered THOUSANDS of immigrants, mostly Central Americans.

Fear of the gangs is driving down the numbers. Nobody wants to return.
