A federal judge showed little sympathy Monday to an East Hartford grandmother who claimed she embezzled more than $1 million from the Mark Twain House and Museum to support her struggling, extended family.

In her defense, Donna Gregor told Senior U.S. District Judge Warren W. Eginton, "The reports of my theft have been greatly exaggerated."
You gotta admire... her chutzpah!
But that she was a thief was established, now they were just haggling over the amount.
People would have helped her. That’s no reason to commit theft. Its never the right thing to do, ever.
Believe me, I have sympathy for her daughter. I know what its been like to take care of a sick parent. But that doesn’t excuse what her mother did. I can’t honor a parent who neither fears God nor man.
And her dishonesty actually has made things worse.
'A pathological altruist.' ...Un hunh....in my circle this sorta falls under the "That dog just won't hunt" column. She's a con artist and a thief...but I repeat myself.
Greed...plain and simple. Well, that, and a great deal of stupidity!
Just like Jon Corzine?
Samuel Langhorne Clemens would not have been surprised.
