When Governor Rick Perry tossed his hat into the Presidential ring, he said he was joining the race at his wife, Anita Perry’s urging. Perry believed it was his duty to run and was answering the question President Kennedy had asked Americans 50 years prior in his inaugural address: “ask what you can do for your country.”

Was Perry ready to run for President? No. His stumbles on the campaign reflect that reality. Is he ready to be President? Yes. His impressive record of conservative governance and Texas’ dominating economic growth attest to his strong leadership. There is an important distinction between these two questions. When President Reagan ran for President in 1980, he took on the Republican establishment and the country-club wing of the party. And he won. Yet Reagan benefited from already having run for President in 1976.

Yet Reagan benefited from already having run for President in 1976.

He also ran in '68. Reagan had a lot of experience in nation wide politics by '80. This is why jumping in late for POTUS with no previous experience, to be sly, is always a loser. If Perry started with everyone else, he would have grown with the pack and his flubs would have been less glaring.

He will be a fine President and I have no problem voting for him. The problem arises getting others to agree. His debate performance was good this week. It should have been to that level a couple months ago when people started to pay attention. If he had more time to craft defenses of his couple of stinker policies he had in TX and bullet point his vision of Americas future, he would be in great shape now.

With the moved up Primary and large field of candidates, the margin for error was razor thin. He should have taken every advantage to get ahead and that included getting in earlier to get the bugs out of his campaign. How else can you explain his massive drop in the polls and fundraising?

Perry has done just fine in the last 3 debates. Many believe the brain freeze was on purpose to get lots of face time on tv and show the public who Rick Perry is. It worked and he got what he wanted...tv face time. But it isn’t about debates it is about a record. Perry is the ONLY one who fills the bill on that one. He has an outstanding record...it’s about jobs and the economy. No one can match Rick Perry’s record.

I’m not trying to win supporters for Perry here at FR...it’s the lurkers who have changed to Perry by lurking. They’ve also been turned off by the hate filled attacks against Perry and his supporters. Because of it they’ve taken a closer look at Perry and found no foundation for the vile attacks and have now given time and money in electing Rick Perry as nominee and then President.

I don’t believe that the forgetful moment was on purpose or that he got into the race “to be sly.” I truly believe he’s an honest man who didn’t decide until after the “I’ll think about it!” after being pressed the 10,000th time in May and he got caught up in the moment at the debate.
