High-profile reversal on public lands shooting
Seattle Gun Rights Examiner | 24 November, 2011 | Dave Workman

Whether the threat was ever as real as many gun rights activists feared, a draft plan put forth by the Bureau if Land Management that called for curtailed recreational shooting on public lands was officially derailed Wednesday by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

In a memo to the BLM director, published by Washington Whispers, Salazar said this:

"It is a priority of the Department of the Interior to support opportunities for hunting, fishing, and recreational shooting on America's public lands. By facilitating access, multiple use, and safe activities on public lands, the Bureau of Land Management helps ensure that the vast majority of the 245 million acres it oversees are open and remain open to recreational shooting."—Interior Secretary Ken Salazar

As this column initially reported, the Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Conservation Council — an advisory group — fired a political shot across BLM’s bow, energizing the firearms community in the process. A source at the BLM told this column several days ago that the reaction was swift and sizzling, despite the fact that the proposal was only a draft. This column was first to provide a link to the actual draft, while other alerts instead linked to the WHHCC’s opposition statement, which was enough to launch the tidal wave of opposition.

The experience has reminded the Obama administration that with an election year looming on the horizon, it is not simply bad policy to merely hint at new gun restrictions of any kind, it is political insanity.

This is clearly a victory for the WHHCC, the National Rifle Association and others in the gun rights community who sounded the alarm.

This administration appears to be a weird mixture of corruption, ideological brittleness, and political ineptitude.

It makes them very dangerous.

I love it when the mask slips and we discover who these people really are.

Throwing out as much anti-gun tidbits in an effort to gauge public response and see what actually sticks.

I'm absolutely surprised O-bozo hasn't gone for the long ball and instituted by executive order a ban on certain types of firearms.

Read a report that the bozo addressed Brady group and indicated that his admin was indeed working behind the scenes.

Curious, has anyone heard anything?

Just wait until next year when they’re losing in the polling for the WH and Congressional races. That’s when they’ll unveil their scorched earth policies.

Gun control seems to have become a high voltage third rail.

Perfect.

"To encourage recreational shooting on public lands, Bureau of Land Management officials will be installing "personalized, individual firing ranges" on all public lands."
