Rep. Michele Bachmann on Saturday stood by her claim that Newt Gingrich supports "amnesty" for illegal immigrants, digging up a letter the former House speaker signed nearly eight years ago to combat claims that she was misrepresenting his plan.
Gingrich, after saying at a Republican presidential primary debate that the U.S. should afford some illegal immigrants a pathway to legal status, has clarified that he only wants to open that door for some illegal immigrants who have been in the country 25 years or more.
Bachmann, in an interview with Fox News, cited a 2004 letter Gingrich co-authored expressing support for then-President George W. Bush's immigration plan. The letter applauded Bush's proposed guest-worker program, while endorsing "paths to permanent residence to enable more workers to stay, assimilate, and become part of America." The letter, which was published in The Wall Street Journal, praised Bush for recognizing that "those already working here outside the law are unlikely to leave."

Sign 'em up for permanent non-deportation, Newt.
Good for her! In fact, I’ll help you, Michele:
Let me be the first to call for a Newt vs. Michele, Lincoln-Douglas style debate on the subject of immigration so we can get this silliness behind us.
Wake up and smell the coffee America...
The Republican establishment IS the problem...
ANY republican candidate for Amnesty should be SLAPPED.. for being so stupid..
Even the candidates that are “for amnesty” know the voters are “not for amnesty”..
Including Bachmann?
You gonna do the slappin', big fella?
Conservatism is not about a
particular person.
Some hero figure.
The person with the “best chance to win”.
I don’t care how much “experience” a candidate has.
How electable they are means absolutely nothing for conservatism.
What matters is what they say.
And what they do.
[ Let me be the first to call for a Newt vs. Michele, Lincoln-Douglas style debate on the subject of immigration so we can get this silliness behind us. ]
Newt is for Gerrymandered Amnesty.. not “in your face”, “pass the tacos”, amnesty..
Michele Bachmann fails to see the difference..
Well, for what it is worth ... eight years ago I did not believe in closed borders. Now, I want them as tight as they can be.
[ You gonna do the slappin’, big fella? ]
No, Negrodamus is going to do that... after you bend over and “assume the position”...
So now we’re gonna start slicing up the definition of amnesty? When can we get back to beating Obama in 2012?
There is no debate necessary between Newt & Michelle on the illegals issue. Newt is on record, paper & video, on his various flip flops on this issue. Michelle has been steadfast all along.
Newt thought he was executing a brilliant move by talking Amnesty, thinking that will pull in Perry supporters, since Perry’s numbers are sinking.
I would have been willing to vote for her even though the chance of her nomination is between slim and none; but this insane attack on her own position by framing it in terms of some old letter, not the written systemic approach Newt is running on, is a sign of malignant mental illness.
Dittoes for the paranoid morons who agree with her.
That should put the brakes on this topic.
Touche’ Let me renew my call and reinforce it to any Newt operatives that may be reading. Newt should challenge Micelle to a Lincoln/Douglas style debate on the topic of immigration. Let’s settle this thing. Then we can get back to work slamming Obama instead of each other.
Immigration has become the third rail in politics and no candidate is in front of it.
The reality is that a soft stance is needed in the general to carry battleground states like Colorado.
Wrong. A debate is absolutely necessary due to the demagoguery and misinformation I have read over the past three days. If Newt’s position is as bad as you claim, you should welcome his reiterating it before a national audience. In fact, I believe I will email this idea to his campaign.
