Your theory is somewhat limited. You rarely see REAL New Yorkers in Times Square unless they’re there to see a show at a nearby theater. Times Square is virtually ALL tourists and hucksters who prey on tourists. REAL New Yorkers tend to be found in the gazillion neighborhoods spread around the city’s five boroughs and, other than their politics, tend to be quite normal people.
Thanks for the words of support regarding New Yorkers! Times Square has never been a destination for New Yorkers unless they are taking the subway (it’s a major subway hub) or going to a restaurant or Broadway show in the neighborhood. Personally, I liked it in its old “Midnight Cowboy” days.
That sounds sort of like Las Vegas, Nevada. To find the locals, don't go to the Strip, but to the strip malls on Maryland Parkway, Charleston Blvd., etc.
