Man Convicted in Death of War Hero's Dog (Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell's dog DASY)
The Huntsville Item ^ | 12-02-11 | Cody Stark

Former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell still feels upset about the shooting death of his service dog DASY almost three years after the fact.

(snip)

Luttrell said he heard a single gunshot, grabbed his pistol and ran next door to his mother’s residence to check on her. He then made his way down to the roadway, crawled underneath a fence and saw DASY had been shot.

(snip)

“I wanted to take a shot at the driver, but I figured if I missed and shot out the back window, I would not be able to catch them,” Luttrell said.

(snip)

“(Alfonso Hernandez) got out and kicked and beat that dog and thought it was funny. They thought it was just another dog,” she said. “To Marcus Luttrell it was so much more. It was a symbol he carried around for what happened to him. He was reminded of the people it was named after. To Marcus Luttrell that was just not another dog.”

The jury heard testimony this week from Texas Ranger Steve Jeter, who helped investigate the case, and Edmonds that Alfonso Hernandez and Edmonds were connected to other dog shootings prior to the incident on Four Notch Road.

It would be great if they could come up with enough evidence to convict on multiple charges.

“(Alfonso Hernandez) was out hunting rabbits, coons and possums,” Barnett said in closing arguments. “... It would have been like if Mr. Luttrell had been out on patrol in Afghanistan and one of his men up and shot a woman or a child and Mr. Luttrell was held responsible. Alfonso was not responsible for what Mr. Edmonds did.

Un f'n believable. Too bad Luttrell didn't kill all of them, including their scumbag lawyer.

Every American should know the story of American hero Marcus Luttrell, the “Lone Survivor”. After leading four Navy SEALs into Afghanistan on a mission to kill a Taliban leader thought to be an associate of Osama bin Laden, Luttrell and his men met two men and a teenager, supposedly livestock herders. The team debated whether or not the men should be released, running the risk of the natives alerting the Taliban. Luttrell voted to let them go.

An hour later, almost 100 soldiers were dead, a US helicopter was shot down killing all 16 men aboard, and Marcus Luttrell was alone and horrendously wounded in the desert, the lone survivor of the SEALs biggest battle in history. Locals rescued him and went to great lengths hiding Luttrell from the Taliban until the US military could rescue him.

That Luttrell is with us today is simply amazing. The man is a true American original and the sort of man we should tell our children to admire instead of the over-coiffed effeminate twits they’re told to emulate. Moreover, he seems like a very, very nice man; a gentleman, even. I’ve heard him talk to Glenn many, many times, and never fail to appreciate his character, manner, honesty, and unabashed, hot-blooded patriotism. He’s a rara avis among those of my generation.

Unfortunately, Mr. Luttrell needs our prayers a little more than usual today.

On April 1, 2009, four teenage males approached Luttrell’s property and killed his dog, Dasy, with a .357 Magnum revolver at approximately 1 A.M.

Each letter of the name “DASY” represents one of the fallen members of his team—Daniel “Danny” Dietz, Matthew “Axe” Axelson, Southern boy (Marcus), and Michael “Yankee” Murphy. She was given to him in recovery to help him through rehabilitation.

Luttrell proceeded to follow the individuals through three counties in his truck armed with two 9 mm Berettas—until Onalaska Police apprehended the individuals. Upon arrest, the suspects verbally threatened Luttrell’s life and taunted him. Alfonso Hernandez was arrested on-scene for driving without a valid drivers license and later charged with animal cruelty. Michael Edmonds turned himself in on April 7, was booked, and posted bond on the same charge. The other two individuals were not indicted. The males are also suspects in the killings of other neighborhood dogs. (13)

Cruelty to animal laws and punishments have to be much tougher. As they are now, they don’t deter anyone.

Besides being felony stupid, what are they, suicidal? It is not a way to make your insurer happy or solvent to be threatening the life of a combat decorated member of DEVGRU aka SEAL Tm Six! The SEALs take care of their own. Heck, the SEALs would wipe him out just for what he did to the dog! They're extremely fortunate that Luttrell didn't catch them before they became mobile. Rest in Pieces.

“When the local war hero took the stand Thursday in the cruelty to non-livestock animals trial of Alfonso Hernandez,”

Huh? It’s legal to torture livestock?

Livestock are probably covered under a different set of laws. You know how it is, why have one law where ten will suffice?

Sad story. Hopefully, the little monster will be kept locked up long enough to avert his becoming a mass murderer, as animal abusers often end up.

The difference is actually pretty relevant. Livestock are allowed to be killed (in the slaughtered sense) using methods that aren't allowed on dogs, cats and other domesticated animals.

You'll be charged for breaking a dog's neck with your bare hands. But not if you do the same thing to a chicken (you are killing in order to eat).

There are different laws for livestock because we eat them. Otherwise some overzealous prosecutor would jail someone for taking a cow to the butcher.

“Edmonds testified that he shot DASY, but that the others wanted to go back and look at the dog. He said that Alfonso Hernandez then got out and started beating the dog with a wooden baseball bat.”

The poor dog must have still been alive after being shot, and they wanted to beat it to death with the bat. Bastards.

Let’s hope that “the bastards” are sufficiently outed to the prison population where they will be incarcerated. Even most hardened criminals would not do what these scum did and it would be justice if they were to have “accidents” while in jail. Prayers for Marcus and his beloved dog. I just gave mine a hug after reading this sorry tale. Dogs are God’s gift to us all.
