These New Poll Numbers Should Have Mitt Romney VERY Worried About Newtmentum

With less than 30 days to go until the Iowa caucuses, Newt Gingrich officially emerged as the clear Republican frontrunner this week, opening up a double-digit lead over presumptive nominee Mitt Romney in a series of new polls.

A new CBS/New York Times survey released Tuesday evening is the latest to put Gingrich at the front of the pack among Republican caucus-goers in Iowa, a key early voting state. The poll finds Gingrich leading Romney in Iowa by 14%, with 31% support compared to Romney's 17%. The numbers match up closely with the new ABC News/Washington Post Iowa poll, also released Tuesday, which found Gingrich leading Romney 33% to 18%.

Evangelicals are supporting Newt in mass!!! Both polls find that Gingrich’s surge is built largely on support from white evangelical Republicans — a key voting bloc that makes up about 60% of Iowa’s GOP caucus-goers. According to the CBS/NYT numbers, for instance, Gingrich has the support of 34% of white evangelical caucus-goers — more than his 31% support overall and far surpassing Romney’s 10% evangelical support. Moreover, the former House Speaker’s favorability ratings among white evangelical Republicans is 60%, compared to 31% for Romney. Conversely, Romney has a 43% unfavorability rating among evangelicals, compared to Gingrich’s 18%.

The numbers are similar in South Carolina, where Gingrich leads Romney among born-again Christians by about two-to-one, according to a new Winthrop University survey released Tuesday. As in Iowa, evangelicals make up about 60% of South Carolina’s Republican primary voters.

If the above link still works — you can watch the panel gnash their teeth over Romney’s loss of traction. I haven’t seen such dismay since Eddie dumped Debbie and ran off with Liz Taylor.

Even Bret Baier looks sickened after reading the poll numbers showing Newt dusting Mitt.

The fact is this. No one ever wins the presidency with basically a zero enthusiasm level. Romney produces absolutely zero enthusiasm. A handful of beltway class people think he looks like a president so he is being pushed, but this guy has Ben running for six years, and is stuck between 22 and 25%.

I am comfortable with Newt because he is an intellectual heavy weight, and will take it to Obama and the media. I am still open to others to rise to the occasion and win my vote.

You know that really burns me up. The talking heads telling Romney how to garner support and use surrogates such as Christie to do his dirty work. All giving Romney advice on beating Newt. They are pure Romney people. I thought Fox was “fair and balanced”

i don’t know if Romney should be worried about Newt - but he must be just exhausted from being worried about: Bachmann, then Perry, then Cain........also i find evangelicals supporting Newt enthusiastically a little hard to fathom with his personal foibles...some of his RINO positions.......hmmmmmmm.

I watched the clip. It is 7:08 of them giving all advice they could think of to de-rail Gingrich. They had nothing positive to say about Newt. It was entirely “what can Romney do to get back on top!?!”

Also, why am I not surprised to learn that Trent Lott is such a huge Romney supporter?

I noted yesterday how Gretchen refers to Romney as ‘Mitt’. Never Mitt Romney or Romney.

However, she referred to all the other candidates by their full names or last names only.

Seemed to have a warm & fuzzy attachment to the ‘Mitt’.

Subliminal.

Looks good for Newt in Iowa, SC and Fla. Romney will take NH but it wont be a runaway and not with the big numbers he should have...oh, Romney has the media with him...he shouldnt be too tired. They work for free on his behalf.

That’s odd! Isn’t Gretchen personally familiar with Bachmann? Seems I heard somewhere that Bachmann once babysat her.

The only reason every one is so excited about such a tiny, nothing state, where there are no party lines in the primary, is because it is first primary state.

NH means nothing except it give the talking heads a drum to beat.

There are 4 electoral college votes in NH, 8 in SC and 25 in FL so tell me again, other than the media and the people that live there, who cares about NH?

Here’s an amusing video, Jon Stewart examines flipper Mitt Romney. At 1:45 in the video, Romney is seen in an interview filmed a few days ago, being asked by Bret Baier what book he read last. Romney declines to tell the truth, because that book is apparently not serious enough. Instead he says he “just read” Decision Points by GWB.

Jon Stewart then shows us a clip of Romney being asked the same question 6 months ago and replying he “just finished” Bush’s book.

I know all politicians are scripted to some degree, but it was still funny.
