The Air Force dumped the incinerated partial remains of at least 274 American troops in a Virginia landfill, far more than the military had acknowledged, before halting the secretive practice three years ago, records show.
The landfill dumping was concealed from families who had authorized the military to dispose of the remains in a dignified and respectful manner, Air Force officials said. There are no plans, they said, to alert those families now.

Jail time should be MANDATED for this ...
And they ARE NOT going to notify the families ???
EACH Chief of Staff of the affected services should string the Air Force Chief of Staff up ...
So much for not leaving any man behind ...
Someone needs to answer for this and heads need to roll.
Fragments. Much ado about nothing.
I am at a loss to understand this. We will spend many tens of thousands of dollars to recover remains of our fallen, and we should do this, but then dispose of other remains in a landfill defies logic. I do not understand this.
Sickening.
Disgraceful.
Disgusting.
Shameful.
A court martial and dishonorable discharge for the CO who authorized such a program.
I wonder if thats the same landfill where they dump the burned bibles.
They may be fragments to you, but they are still remains of military men and women that deserve to be honored with a decent burial.
Burial at sea might have been a good option - seeing as Dover AFB [where the USAF mortuary is located] is VERY close to the shore.
Each set of cremated remains should have been stored in an urn and then say once a month a commitment at sea with a military chaplain could be performed.
BUT NOOOOO !!! They just tossed them in the landfill like yesterday's shoes ...
i’ve requested that when I croak that i be thrown in the dumpster and sent to the landfill!
Families are going to be inquiring quite pointedly and I would not be surprised to see a big Congressional investigation here. Was it even the most economical way to inter the ashes with rotten banana peels and dirty diapers, what with dumping fees and the like? It ought to have been done out in the open ocean, at the least. That would not have been far.
Even an old gallon sized mayo jar from the mess hall would have been more dignified than this. Good grief!
What do you do when a person loses a limb, or has something surgically removed, save it ?
Fragments, mostly unidentifiable. Prioritize. This is a dristraction of the Washington Post.
Major distraction indeed. Countering Fast & Furious???
The Obama Administration is PURE EVIL. Anyone involved in this - right to the top should be charged with treason and given the most severe punishment.
Has nothing to do with O, they stopped the practice in 2008. This as has been stated is to distract people from O’s fail policies and to make Bush look bad. This is not bodies it is fragments and in many cases fragments that cannot even be identified as to who they belong to. Too much blast damage and burns.
Not just jail but Navy prison. Those jarheads would be real glad to see them...
How hard was it to figure out "bury the cremains at sea?" Every honorably discharged veteran can so elect. I have the form filled out up to date of death and a copy of my DD214 with my will and my daughters and wife all know it.
Please don't bury me down in the cold, cold ground.
I'd rather have them cut me up and pass me all around...
They are the human remains of American Service members . They are treated with contempt by the Air Force in violation of orders repeatedly & in a conscious manner ie they knew they were violating Orders & didn’t give a shit .
Heads need to roll & they should be field grade officer heads as they were the ones that knew what was going on & didn’t get the situation sorted out.
Yes, they could have been buried at sea, creamated and interred at Arlington.
I pray this is truly investigated and those responsible Court Martialed. It is very hard for me to imagine thinking my child was treated in this manner.
Those people are lower than scum, if possible.
Fragments, mostly unidentifiable. Prioritize. This is a dristraction of the Washington Post.
When a person loses a limb, they at least are still alive. MAJOR DIFFERENCE.
I don't give a damn if the fragments are unidentifiable - they deserve to be treated with respect. Cremation and a burial at sea with an appropriate service would be just fine.
But, tossing them away is intolerable. By your thinking, we shouldn't even have a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - just dig 'em up and throw them away since they are not identifiable ...
Why do you think we have teams in Vietnam looking for lost remains? Why do you think that when farmers in France [and other European nations] find remains from WWI and WWII, they call their government agency responsible for the bodies? They then try to identify and return the bodies to their nations [if possible] - barring that, the remains get a proper burial in one of the overseas cemeteries.
And I don't give a damn whether the tossing of remains happened under Bush or Obama. Those in the military that authorized this KNEW they were doing wrong and KNEW they were dis-respecting the remains.
They should be accountable for it - not just reprimanded and re-assigned.
