Jon Huntsman jumps into 3d in New Hampshire; Gingrich gains some on Romney

These days if you don't like the polls, wait a few minutes. Another will be along shortly.

Speaking of which, here's a new one this morning that could presage the start of a significant move by one candidate (or not), as well as some fresh insights into the thinking of those New Hampshire voters who'll hold the nation's first Republican primary early next month.

Suffolk University is out with a new survey showing Newt Gingrich gaining and Mitt Romney slipping there, which we already knew.

What it also shows though is Jon Huntsman making a push into third place with double-digit support, his highest standing yet anywhere. Ahead of that wascaly wabbit Won Paul.

According to Suffolk's data, Romney is still ahead with 38% (down from 41% in mid-November), Gingrich with 20% (up from 14%) and Huntsman with 13% (up from 9%). Huntsman's campaign immediately fired off email fundraising appeals.

All of the other usual suspects are in single digits -- Ron Paul at 8% (down from 14%), Michele Bachmann at 3%, Rick Santorum, Buddy Roemer and former candidate Herman Cain each at 2%, with Rick Perry and Gary Johnson each at 1%.

Huntsman has put all of his eggs in the Granite state basket, which those folks historically appreciate. Living room by living room, diner by diner, he's worked the little state hard, even while the bigger names were debating in Iowa, where they will again tonight on Fox News.

Apparently Huntsman's efforts are starting to have some effect, mainly among independents. They are permitted to vote in the state's GOP primary and can play a major role, as they did reviving John McCain's political pulse four years ago.

That way everyone can have their own facts. Want to feel good? Buy a poll. ;-)

I would think the Newt/Huntsman debate had a lot to do with it.

Why in the hell is New Hampster an early primary state?
They don’t reflect conservative values for the most part.

I did not watch the Gingrich/Huntsman debate. I had forgotten all about it, and by the time I read about it, it was already over

No, but if somebody's gotta go first, they're preferable to The People's Republik of Kalifornia or the Nanny State of New York. That pecking order would perpetually hand us a nominee who was only slightly to the right of a John Kerry type. And probably as insufferable.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

Why do you think New Hampshire's early primary has anything to do with conservative values? It's a tradition, nothing more, nothing less.

Huntsman has put everything “in one basket” it sez, and is in third place behind Mitt and Newt.

I think they shape our candidate in ways that don’t help conservatism.
It’s an open primary to boot isn’t it?

It’s traditional to let liberals vote for the conservative candidate?

That’s a tradition we could do without!

Newt gaining...

Speaking of New Hampshire, I read this Dec 21st quote below from a Gallup article..... "Romney's lead is not surprising. He has been ahead in various polls of New Hampshire Republicans all year long, a position most often ascribed to the visibility he gained as governor of neighboring state Massachusetts."

What's interesting is it's from 2008! McCain as we know went on to win New Hampshire. Newt is a different candidate but he could still win in there.
