Gingrich Unloads on Paul: Worse Than Obama
NationalJournal ^ | 12-27-2011 | Jill Lawrence

Newt Gingrich has finally found a politician he considers even worse than the president he calls socialist, anti-colonialist and radical. That would be his fellow Republican Ron Paul.

"I think Barack Obama is very destructive to the future of the United States. I think Ron Paul's views are totally outside the mainstream of virtually every decent American," Gingrich said Tuesday in a CNN interview with Wolf Blitzer.

Could he vote for Paul? "No." If it came down to Paul vs. Obama? "You'd have a very tough choice at that point."

Gingrich's fencing with Mitt Romney seems like an afternoon at a gentleman's club compared with his slams on Paul. "As people get to know more about Ron Paul, who disowns 10 years of his own newsletter, says he didn't really realize what was in it, had no idea what he was making money off of, had no idea that it was racist, anti-Semitic, called for the destruction of Israel, talked about a race war - all of this is a sudden shock to Ron Paul?" he asked. "There will come a morning people won't take him as serious person."

Right now in Iowa, the week before the state's Jan. 3 caucuses, Paul is a very serious person - in the top tier along with Gingrich and Romney and playing aggressively to win. "If Dr. Paul will have to soldier on without Newt's vote, then so be it," Paul campaign manager Jesse Benton said in a statement. He called Gingrich "a divisive, big-government liberal who is unelectable" and his attack on Paul a "childish outburst."

Paul's supporters have complained for months that Paul wasn't getting the attention he deserved. Now that he's within reach of an early-state victory, the media scrutiny and attacks from rivals are escalating rapidly.

Michele Bachmann piled on Paul in an interview Tuesday with Rodney Hawkins of National Journal and CBS News. She cited "racist statements" in Paul's newsletters and said he is indifferent about the prospect of Iran having a nuclear weapon. "Ron Paul would be dangerous for the United States on foreign policy," she said.

Gingrich unloaded on Paul after Blitzer showed a tough Paul attack ad accusing Gingrich of "serial hypocrisy." Gingrich said Paul's "total record of systemic voidance of reality" makes him unthinkable as a president. He is, Gingrich said, "a person who thinks the United States was responsible for 9/11, a person who ... wrote in his newsletter that the World Trade Center bombing in 1993 might have been a CIA plot, a person who believes it doesn't matter if the Iranians have a nuclear weapon."

Gingrich declared twice during the interview that Paul won't get the GOP nomination. Benton countered with the rhetorical equivalent of "neither will you."

Conservatives and tea party activists are fleeing Gingrich due to his support for TARP and an individual insurance mandate (which he has since renounced), Benton said, while independent voters "are horrified by Newt's history of ethics violations, insider pay-to-play politics and influence peddling."

It isn't New Year's Eve yet, but it's safe to say the holiday season is over.

I'm not a Paul supporter by any means, but at least he served in the military, delivered thousands of babies, and is married to the same woman for over 50 years, unlike Mr. Know-It-All.

I am not a Paul supporter at all but at least he stayed married to the same woman and does not have a potential First Lady who basically stole a husband from a wife. I don’t want Romney, Newtie or Paul.....Huntsman either.

The voters in his district elected him as a Republican.

ARGH!! We’re calling him a RepubliCAN now, are we? (As in: I don’t think of him as a Republican) My internet keeps conking out on me so I’ve taken to posting without previewing because I never know if I’ll have time to post before it blinks out again. It’s driving me nuts.

...”are horrified by Newt’s history of ethics violations...”

Why is it that Ron Paul supporters absolutely, positively CANNOT ever tell the truth?

Every word out of the mouths of the Paul campaign is either a wild accusation against our country or a blatant LIE about an opponent.

Why is this guy not running as a Democrat?!?!?!?

You are a snarky jerk. Your words indicate you would rather have an anti American and anti Semite racist in office as opposed to someone who at least wants to see America great again.

Gingrich probably won't win the nomination, but thank God, I know that Ron Paul has no chance. He is an embarrassing joke and after he retires from the House after this term, we will be rid of him for good. The Office of the President is no place for a racist.

This is really a stupid thing for Newt to do. Paul makes a compelling domestic case and his nuttiness on defending America does not put him or his supporters “outside” the realm of “decent” people. If he wins the nomination, he’s going to need some Paul votes to take him across the line.

Dumb dumb dumb.

Newt tried to take the high road and not attack his fellow candidates, but they unloaded on him and knocked him off his perch. Now, it seems, he has no choice but to respond in kind since the voters of Iowa have shown how responsive they are to negative campaigning. I don’t blame Newt, I blame the voters of Iowa.

So, now we are expected to vet the “potential First Lady”? WTF does that have to do with the qualifications of a Presidential candidate? Or, as is obvious, your comments are just muck throwing at competition to your preferred candidate.

I worry about losing Ron Paul votes as much as I worry about losing the votes of NAACP members. Neither one was coming anyway.

“If he wins the nomination, he’s going to need some Paul votes to take him across the line.”

Sure seems to like shooting himself in the foot, doesn’t he?

The bigger threat, though, is not Ron Paul supporters not supporting the gop-e nominee, it’s of him taking his supporters and his money and his organization and running a third party challenge that will scuttle any chance of the gop nominee winning the general election.

I will say this in his defense, though. At least Newt is attacking Ron Paul himself, and not hiding behind surrogates in the conservative media to do his dirty work for him.

“Why is it that Ron Paul supporters absolutely, positively CANNOT ever tell the truth?”

Well, I happen to be a Ron Paul supporter at this point. And I’m very curious to hear where I have failed to tell the truth. Is there some factual misrepresentation that I have made on FR? Or is your definition of the “truth” whatever your opinion is, and a “liar” is anyone who has the temerity to disagree with your opinion?

I would rather see a CONSERVATIVE who loves America as much as I do in office than someone who is so crooked they could sleep on a pretzel and who is power hungry. Do just a little research on Gingrich, I challenge you.

Since I don’t think Paul or Gingrich are Conservatives, I won’t be voting for either.

And he can see Cuba from his house, and he didn't know he was running a gay prostitution ring and crack house out of his basement, and scores of women will be coming out of the woodwork claiming he had affairs with them...(well maybe not that last one)

Gingrich is indeed the devil but hes correct..
Satan telling the truth is “news”...

Paul has some extremely funny no strange views..
Obama is a socialist maybe even a Marxist..
And Romney spent a career fooling(tricking) democrats..

Whats NEVER said (( IS )) they are all four PROGRESSIVES..
They “MAY” reduce the deficit “some of them” BUT they will NEVER reduce the “government”..

Many miss that Newt said he would reduce the scope of the federal government BUT HE WOULD increase the scope of State government.. to replace it.. He could be Gene Kelly with that dance..

NOW you got to give it him.. THATS a real shell game..
The pea wheres the pea.. pick your shell..

Perry is also a progressive but thats another story..
BAchmann and Santorum are our ONLY OPTIONS..
