Iceland was first settled in something like 800 AD by some monks.

There was no sign of any prior human habitation or even hunting camps!

No doubt the whole place gets burned off from time to time and recapped with a new basalt surface.

it is quite a surreal place, large tracts of the country are covered in geologically recent lava fields. I remember one hill near lake myvatn which you could see had literally been ripped at the center and separated over time.

The country, from a landscape perspective, is unique.
