Talk with Tea Party leaders here in South Carolina and you quickly realize that the toughest job in the Mitt Romney campaign would be the assignment of doing outreach to these activists. Maybe not a mission impossible, but close.
They really want no part of Romney. And there appears to be little he could say or do between now and Jan. 21, the date of the South Carolina primary, to change that.
The Massachusetts health law Romney enacted as governor with its individual mandate called Romneycare by critics is just one of several reasons they give for their animus.
There are Romney's policy-position switches that some have less charitably called flip flops. And there's Romney's failure, at least in Tea Party activists' eyes, to reach out to them directly.
"There's no Tea Partier that I talk to in the state or nationally that would want to promote Romney," said Karen Martin who leads the Spartanburg Tea Party. "Other than the people that have come out publicly and endorsed Mitt Romney and the people left over from his 2008 campaign, I do not personally know anyone that does not despise Mitt Romney and doesn't hate the idea of him being our nominee..."

Methinks Romney is going to get hit hard from Newt, Santorum, and even Paul. WE will see if he can hold up. Sure hope MR gets thumped.
South Carolina Tea Partiers Wish Romney Would Just Go Away
- - - - -
That goes for Tea Partiers in almost every other state as well (Utah being the exception).
Wouldn’t the quoted statement seem a little extreme and be directly ‘refudiated’ by the SC Governor’s support?
BTW - C2J - you should check out Scala and Clojure.
Are you kidding me? Do you live in the same state as I do?
NEWT will take SC by a wide margin. Other than the Ron Paul loyalists, Newt is the favorite by almost everyone in South Carolina.
are these the people newt bought off...as bachman says?
It warms my heart when Santorum explicitly states that AGW is a fraud. He is strong on this issue and others.
Let me get this straight. South Carolina is very much a Bible Belt state. The people here are traditional Americans. They believe in God, family and country. There are no gray areas.
But somehow you believe they will support a serial philanderer. South Carolinians hate Washington and Big Government. They believe in self sufficiency and individual freedom. They are well aware of Newty’s love seat global warming ad with Nancy Pelosi. They hate Pelosi. They know global warming is a scam. Newty’s position on goverment driven health care is spotty at best. South Carolinians hate Onadacare and Romneycare.
Given all of this factual info you post that voters here overwhelmingly support Newt. You are either a demrat/RINO lurker or......
I too am from SC and everyone I know is rooting for Newt
I am the furthest thing from a Rino I can assure you...
I am telling you, most people in SC support Newt, including myself. I would also not be unhappy if Santorum were the nominee.
All of the candidates have done stupid things, Romnet, Santorum, Gingrich, Perry, etc.
The last time we had a balanced budget in this country...Newt was responsible
Last time we had welfare reform in this country...Newt was responsible.
He is the best one in my opinion to take Obama down, and that is the view held by most in this state.
