“...better to be from Olney than to be from Kensington...”

Hahah!! I knew a lot of folks from down K&A way; tough, tough people, from a tough neighborhood.

AS for the old German churches....most of them have Korean writing on them now, or are closed up.

There were beautiful stone houses, twins, on Roosevelt Boulevard that are now trashed; some have been torn down, so that the half that is left looks pathetic and stupid, standing there with half of a sloped roof. Others are burned up and boarded up.

I knew kids who’d lived in those houses; played in some of those houses. They weren’t like that when my parents generation lived there - they were well-kept, maintained, and lived in with pride. It wasn’t much, but it was all they had, and they were proud of it, and it showed.

We had block parties on the Fourth of July, fireworks at the Olney HS athletic field, and it was a real neighborhood - everybody knew everybody else on the block, and looked out for each other to a degree.

Now? Drive through there, and you’ll bee disgusted, and endangered.

It’s pathetic what the current residents did to that neighborhoods; I guess when you have zero self-respect, how can you respect anything else?
