RE: “One of the things fellow Republicans and political observers have never liked about Mitt Romney is the wholesome piety he exhibits on the stump, while his hacks and PACs engage in some of the ugliest politics around.”

Exactly. Bingo. And raise your hand FReepers if you’ve been personally subjected to it from the 2008 primaries on.

Big’ol_freeper: Hand raised. Accused of being a “son of perdition” as one example.

By all accounts, it was Romney's former staffers who went after Sarah Palin in 2008. After McCain had the nomination, many Romney folks joined his campaign, perhaps thinking that Mitt would get the VP nod. When it went to Sarah Palin instead, and McCain's numbers started climbing, there was an all out effort to sabotage her....rumors and innuendos from “unnamed” sources within the campaign. I don't think Sarah has forgotten and I think her remarks the other day about Newt were fully intended to convey her belief that Romney should NOT be the nominee this time!

Things seem to happen all the time around Willard. The Boy Scouts can’t show up at the Olympics in uniform, gay marriage becomes the law of the land, Catholic adoption agencies must do homosexual placements, Catholic hospitals must pass out The Morning After Pill to rape victims, assault weapons bills get signed, pink handbills get passed out at Pride parades, Planned Parenthood gets checks...none of it his fault or his doing.

Romney has bought 2.5 million dollars’ worth of ad in Florida, already playing; Newt, so far, none. Newt needs a serious ground effort, and Santorum is going to double team Newt with Romney, that’s what I have read...

I posted this before in this forum, but the mods took it away to bloggers’ forum. I hope it is okay to post it here:

As part of my neighborhood grassroots activity for Newt, we are planning to do a sticky-note tsunami in Florida with individual sticky-notes for different grocery items, and at the gas pumps.

For example, we would like to do stickies for specific items, like a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, pasta, etc. and post them on the shelves where the products are located, with a very simple text, something along the lines: A Loaf of Bread, Obama Inauguration Day $___ ; Loaf of Bread today $___ . Newt Gingrich balanced the budget 4 times, passed welfare reform, helped Pres. Reagan create 11 million jobs. Vote for Newt. He knows how to fix things. www.newt.org

My problem is, I can’t find a listing of specific grocery retail prices ranging those years, just some general stuff on prices of corn, soybeans and stuff. I have looked and looked and looked, and I’ve have been unable to find a range for gas prices through those years, also. I was wondering if someone might have a link for these price fluctuations, for very specific, and very many grocery items.

Florida, you know, has many seniors, on very fixed incomes. Till now, we’ve had all of our attention focused on SC, but it is Sunday night already, and we can’t find this price information anywhere.

I know this probably doesn’t sound like a very sophisticated effort, but we like it, and it is something we do well – swarming. If anyone here could help us out, I would greatly appreciate it. We have all our sticky-notes bought, and people lined up, ready to write them out for us, we just need some good texts, and these prices. I would so appreciate any help the seasoned, wise, and prolific members of Free Republic could give us.

Thank you very much.

It's really quiet in here now. Since most of the Romney-bots have been Zotted, we can now, with impunity, make all the cult-religion innuendos we want about a particular candidate. In fact, we can do it until all the cult-chickens go home to roost. You know, like.......

Ahh-cult! Ahh-cult!

(oh...sorry there...I got the sneezies, must be getting a cold)

That filthy lying commie cult member and his GOP "elite" handlers are about to feel the real power of Freerepublic and the Tea Party in Florida !

Hopefully then he will climb back under his the seer stone he came from under like the the slimy white salamander that he is.

Mitt is ugly but he hates confrontation. He is too cowardly for that.

Mitt is a weak person, which is why Newt is gonna win. Luckily, Newt has got Mitt's number. He knows better than to turn his back on Mitt.

Newt tried to take the high road in Iowa. He learned well how Mitt deals from the bottom of the deck.

Mitt is sneaky...not strong.

He could call, or call-out a Coulter, or Christie and ask them to stand down. But he won't. And even if he did, he wouldn't mean it.

Overall i agree with the article but that line should have been left out. You won't win over too many people evoking a "damned if he does, damned if he doesn't" scenario like the above.

Mitt and his team of elitist NE Republicans just don’t get it. The biggest thing that should alarm anyone who is considering voting for Romney for the nomination is that the Romney campaign seems to have learned nothing from 2008. They have been running virtually the same campaign as they did in 2008 only a bit time delayed. This shows they don’t understand two key things that they need to win regardless of all the other things that some of us care about like say principles.

The first thing Team Romney doesn’t get is why John McCain beat them in 2008. John McCain was dead, kaput, buried before NH. His amnesty talk had nearly destroyed his campaign but what he did was strongly and clearly say he was wrong and it wasn’t long after that he began to rise. He won NH and we all know the rest of the story. John McCain new that he wasn’t going to win being the otherwise of Romney as John Huntsman tried to play so he leveraged what conservative strengths and military record and ran on them and won not because people loved him but because we at least knew who he was even if he was and is often a pain in the *ss. The Romney team still thinks the 2008 campaign was perfect and that is why they are running it again. They simply believed they peaked too soon. That is where they are wrong. They didn’t peak too soon, they are simply targetting the wrong voters. Moderate/lib GOP amount to less than a quarter of the GOP. That leaves a lot of ways a conservative can win the nomination and only one path to it for self styled moderate reformed conservatives like Romney.

The second thing is they are failing to acknowledge the change in the electorate. The 2008 electorate is not the electorate of today. Today self identified conservatives have grown to be an even greater portion of the electorate not just in the GOP but also with Independents who are more conservative than ever. George W Bush actually picked up on this trend early and took advantage of it to win in 2000 and 2008. Obama is an abberation. He didn’t win because the electorate became more liberal as a whole but because the electorate that turned out was more liberal. The Romney camp is running a race out of time.

What Romney should’ve been doing for the past 4 years is standing alongside Palin and others and proving his worth as a harsh critic of Obama and making the case against Obama. Instead he has tried to run a stealth campaign having it both ways. One day he says Obama has made the economy worse and then when interviewed says he really didn’t say that. Romney only recently began to use words like ‘founder’ and limited government when he should’ve been doing that when the Tea Party was rising.

The Romney campaign is the stupid campaign. He should be reorganizing and firing people right now after his dismal showing in SC. He didn’t just lose he was CRUSHED. I doubt they will because the Romney crowd is an arrogant bunch. They still don’t see their mistakes as mustakes instead they are upset at the voters who dare expect them to win their vote on principle and substance not with peer pressure and talk of inevitability as if we are nominating a class president or country club president.

I think Romney is a ‘dead candidate walking’. No Republican in recent history has won the GOP nomination without SC and I doubt it is going to happen this year and certainly not with a smug bunch of elitists trying to tell conservatives how they have no choice but to vote for them if they want to win.

I would bet money (not $10,000 though) that Mitt plans his glib responses that pop out while he is milling on the stump, waiting for one of his crony's to trigger it.

When he lost track during Thursdays debate when he stumbled and bumbled for a few seconds and looked to Newt for help, Newt said, "Gee Mitt, I don't know". As if to say, I don't know what canned response you should say next. Classic over-prepped and under-knowledged.

Mittens was just on Huckleberry’s show. Tearing Newt down. Calling him a lobbyist. Nancy Pelosi on the couch. Fined for ethics violations. His only qualification was an unsuccessful 4 yrs as speaker. Just old talking points.

The Huckster did NOT say anything - just let him rant.

In Romney's speech on SC primary election night, claiming that Gingrich had attacked "free enterprise," he used the same blatantly dishonest sort of tactic Obama uses.

Romney knows very well that Gingrich made no such attack on "free enterprise."

Or, if he truly believes that Gingrich's challenge to him to explain his job creation numbers at Bain constituted an attack on "free enterprise," then he demonstrates that he truly does not understand how to explain the Founders' concept of "freedom of individual enterprise," much less to defend it against Obama's staunch defense of the ideas of redistribution.

He might have done well, in defeat, to have focused on attempting to improve on what Krauthammer has identified as his weakness--and that is his lack of capability for explaining conservative ideas.

Gingrich, on the other hand, was gracious in his winning, complimentary to his competitors, though disagreeing with some of their ideas, and admitted that it was not that he is such a great debater as the pundits condescendingly claim, but that he simply articulates the ideas of liberty which citizens feel in their hearts and want to hear someone defend against the onslaught of counterfeit ideas.

Romney confirmed by this unfair claim about what Gingrich actually had said that he cannot be trusted to be truthful, and that is exactly what Huckabee, McCain, and others in 2008 claimed about him.
