"Angry Newt" took the night off. In a striking role reversal, Newt Gingrich looked more like a firefly than a firebrand in a high-stakes debate Monday night, while rival Mitt Romney called the surging former House Speaker a disgraced, influence-peddling, Washington insider.
Somebody must have awakened the cool-and-nonchalant Romney out of his debate slumber and told him the GOP nomination was slipping away. Gingrich stunned the political world -- and frightened much of the GOP establishment -- with a landslide victory in South Carolina on Saturday night that erased Romney's lead in national and Florida polls.
SNIP
Gingrich's stunning South Carolina victory, coupled with his surge in Florida polling, has created near-panic among Republican consultants, lobbyists, elected officials and staffers, particularly in Washington, who believe Gingrich is too volatile and scandal-plagued to defeat Obama.
"The basic case is that Romney has lost and we're (expletive deleted.) That's what's going on," GOP consultant John Feehery said just before the debate. He was quick to add that he personally doesn't agree that the fundamentals of the race have changed, and that Romney will outlast Gingrich.
"Newt can't stayed tied to this earth," he said.

Sarah Palin all but endorsed Newt in Fla. She recommended voters go back and look at Art Laffer and we know who he endorsed:) she also brought up who was shaped by Reagan and worked with Reagan but she stopped short from naming Newt.
If you are (expletive deleted), it's your own (expletive deleted) fault.
I like “Angry Newt” a lot better than Angry Mitt, Angry Santorum or Angry Ron.
LOL! Sorry buddy!
Beat ya by 4 minutes.
We even snipped at the same spot!
Yup.
She all but outright endorsed him.
Plus her South Carolina quote.
Plus she pretty much endorsed Todd’s endorsement.
Come on, Sarah! Just come out and say it!!
LOL.....Finally one of ‘em gets it!!...duh!
Now its time for the GOP to work for the Republican voters choice, not the other way around......Get it????
How did you like Mitt Romney’s comments on illegals “self deporting?” LOL
“Newt can’t stayed tied to this earth,” he said.
Sounds like a threat.
I think it was rather judicious of Newt to be low key tonight; there’s another debate Thursday. He needs to show that he can not only be fiery, but also mellow, measured.
AND, NBC told the audience ‘no applause’ tonight. Guess they could have just boo’d, cause it was one boring debate.
who believe Gingrich is too volatile and scandal-plagued to defeat Obama.
People in 1775 thought serious patriotic thinkers were over-long and radical, too.
That’s the eternal wonderment of our Constitution: you can always go back to it, forcefully, when men of the world set about destroying it.
It’s a marvel that it anticipates entropy and usurpation, and outlines how to neutralize those natural threats.
Romney’s own record is so pathetic and weak that he has no choice but to tear down other candidates who actually have a decent record of accomplishment. He has latched onto this Freddie/Fannie/lobbying/insider thing and tried to turn it into some kind of ultimate evil. I’m sorry but I really don’t see it that way. I think Newt’s knowledge of D.C. politics and government makes him uniquely qualified, not disqualified for the job he is applying for. One must know one’s enemies before one wrestles with one’s enemies. Romney really hasn’t done that much as a businessman that is impressive and as a politician, even less. He has nothing to talk about except the records of other men...better men than he IMO. He accuses Newt of being the Washington insider but anyone paying attention to who the Washington insiders are supporting would have to conclude that Mitt is the real Washington insider here.
Oh no, it was not boring watching Milt Rominy lie so openly. By noon tomorrow the Newt people will have chapter and verse refutation to Milt’s bold lies. What we saw tonight is a man so devious that he is Obama’s equal at lying openly before millions of viewers. Milt Rominy is an expert yet stupid liar. Brian Williams gave Milt as much cover as he dared, and judiciously ignored Rick Santorum to allow Rominy as much time as he needed to lie through his polished teeth. That was not boring, it was infuriating to watch. AND the retribution coming on Milt the malevolent will be interesting to follow as the media try to spin it or ignore it.
I liked Newts comment better, “they are deporting already, due to this economy”
“it was infuriating to watch.”
I thought NBC’s questions tonight about renewing a Federal Swamp Restoration Program, and that Castro could die, were just riveting, didn’t you?
I mean, they are so much more important than JOBS, high gas prices, high fuel prices, unemployment, homelessness, 44% of Florida homes being underwater, etc, doncha think?
And Brian Williams managed to go 1:40 minutes without EVER mentioning the name “Barack Obama” in a Republican Presidential debate!! But, he did make sure that anyone who dared to mention the Messiah’s name was immediately cut off, though.
Yeah, but Newt knows he can’t win by making a career out of attacking the media/moderator, especially in a venue where the audience has been told to sit down and shut up. So, he shifted to a different strategy tonight, but I’m sure we’ll be playing Angry Newt again soon.
Newt played it well tonight. He did not let Willard make him mad. He seemed presidential and in charge.
