The only car I truly hate is the Prius.
I despise it more than the Volt, because the Prius is the “status car” of the greenie-weenies.
May they all dissolve into puddles of viscous, gooey, plastic ooze.

There was a hotel in Vegas which had to re-engineer its windows which were reflecting enough sunlight into a poolside area that guests were getting serious burns.
It could be that a similar thing is at work here. I’d guess that the law doesn’t allow folks to mount mirrors in ways to cause damage to the property of another, nor would the law allow the accidental harm of new windows installed by some way that caused similar damage to the property of others.

Easy solution: just buy a big mirror and use it to shield your Prius and set your neighbor's house on fire with light from his own high efficiency windows.

—After having the mirrors replaced, she noticed the mirrors on the car parked next to hers were also melting.—
I infer from this that the fact that her car is a Priuth is irrelevant. Rather, it is an issue with too much reflected solar energy coupled with the direct sunlight that is death to plastic car parts, regardless of the make or model.

I’m sure the Prius is a fine car...but so is a Ford Focus.
Base model Prius - $26,400 gets you 44/40 mileage
Base model Focus - $16,500 gets you 26/36
At $3.40 a gallon, the breakover for the Prius owner (not including higher insurance and taxes) would be 344,000 miles.
Or try a Hyundai Elantra - $15,345 gets you 29/40
The breakover would be 623,000 miles
Ergo, this car owner is not right in the head.
I imagaine the breakover on the windows is even worse.

Toyota Motor Corp uses mainly PLA bio-plastics, derived from sweet potatoes corn and sugar beet, reinforced with kenaf to produce components for its cars such as the Prius and Lexus. It hopes to grow its bio-plastics division into a four billion yen business by 2020 and capture two thirds of the global market for petroleum free plastics.

Could be true....I was at a building construction site last week....they had just installed double glazed windows on 48 apartments....at one place in the courtyard I felt hot...on walking back and forwards I discovered an area about 1 square foot that was caused by the concentrated reflection from the sun....
....seems to me the double glazed windows have a partial vacuum inside....this causes a slight curvature of the glass....(concave for those in Rio Vista) and resulting long focal length with concentration of solar energy. ...
The law of unintended consequences....
