MIAMI Former House speaker Newt Gingrich said Friday that the reason he seemed less combative during Thursdays televised debate was that he was shocked by what he described as rival Mitt Romneys totally dishonest replies to several questions.
In a telephone interview, Gingrich cited Romneys remarks on immigration, his vote for Democrat Paul Tsongas in 1992 and whether he knew about an ad his campaign is running against Gingrich.
I think its the most blatantly dishonest performance by a presidential candidate Ive ever seen, Gingrich said. At several moments during the debate, Gingrich simply leaned away from his lectern and looked down at his feet because he was so stunned by some of Romneys statements, he said. He didnt engage Romney at the time, he said, because I wanted to fact check. I wanted to make sure he was as totally dishonest as I thought he was.
Gingrich spoke as a new poll from Quinnipiac University showed Romney back on top in Floridas high-stakes Republican primary, adding to the momentum for the former Massachusetts governor following a strong debate performance Thursday night.
Romney went on the offensive against Gingrich on topics including immigration, taxes and wealth, lobbying, and colonizing the moon. Romney said it was repulsive for the former House speaker to label him the most anti-immigrant candidate in the field. He blasted Gingrichs moon proposal, saying that if a business executive had brought it to him, his response would have been, Youre fired. He goaded his rival into a discussion of his own

Romney was just “lying for the lord.” Google it.
It is simply political expediency all wrapped up in religious dogma. Romney lies because he always has, he has been taught it from the womb.
Bump!
Hmmm. Muslims do the same thing. I have read that Mormons are told to dissemble and pretend they are regular Christians when people ask them questions.
Not surprising that truth matters so little to Romney.
Gingrich is starting to whine too much. We’re looking for a leader.
Newt should be ready for that though. It’s not like Obama is going to tell the truth. He needs to figure out how to call it out without being disrespectful.
Romney sinks himself with lies - has a good ring to it.
Last night’s “debate” was a joke. Wolf Blitzer even called Romney on one of his lies (Romney supposedly didn’t know what was in a particularly offensive attack ad, but the ad bore a statement saying that Romney personally had approved it...) but this made no difference.
Of the 3000 seats, only 800 were available to the public. The rest had been distributed by the RNC, which is Romney all the way.
Romney was blatantly dishonest last night, and his campaign’s been in full-time lie their azzes off mode in Florida for days now.
But, Newt needs to be ready and well-prepared for this. Last night he wasn’t, and it cost him.
Newt has a few days to catch up. It would take a miracle but it is not impossible. Romney is a liberal. He voted for Carter and Tsongas. He introduced socialized medicine to MASS and worked with his friend Teddy Kennedy to create the legislation. Newt is one man that faced an onslaught of lies, smears and attacks from Drudge, Fox and the establishment. Guess Blitzer thinks he put Newt in his place last night.
It was sad to see Newt caught off guard last night on the Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae question..he should have nailed it. That being said..we know that Newt has the fire and the intelligence to lead this nation. Pray the rest of American voters dont base their choice on the msm misinformation hits. Sick of the trickle down slime!
good ad . . . hope a lot of people in FL see it multiple times before Tuesday
He’s quite the effective liar and the audience was stacked.
Like George Soros said, “there’s little difference between obama and Romney.”
—Gingrich is starting to whine too much.—
I’m not seeing it as “whining”. I’m seeing it as calling it out. If he articulates what were lies, that is a good thing.
I started to type that on another thread earlier but didn't. Figured the response would probably be, "Huh?"
I hope that ad play non-stop in Florida!
Calling Mittens out for lying is one thing.
Whining is another.
Fine line but Newt must stand tall and do the former.
Gingrich can’t be that naive. He has to know that Romney and his surrogates will stop at nothing to cut him off at the knees. They will lie, cheat, distort, threaten and predict the apocalypse if they believe it will swing a few votes their way. This isn’t boxing. And it isn’t even the UFC. It’s a no-rules, steel cage match. Gingrich has to get back to the place he was in the SC debates.
