A Wisconsin school superintendent may be rethinking how he dealt with a student who wrote a school newspaper article condemning homosexuality as sinful. As part of an assignment for his journalism class, which is responsible for producing the school newspaper, 15-year-old Shawano High School student Brandon Wegner contributed half of a pro-con editorial feature on adoption by homosexual couples, using Scripture to buttress his case against same-sex couples adopting children.
Wegner, who was raised in a Christian home, pointed out that, according to Leviticus 18:22, it is an abomination for couples of the same sex to be intimately involved. With perfect biblical logic, Wegner wrote that God made man and woman with the intention of them getting married to each other and having children. As Christians, same-sex partnership is against many Christian beliefs so why would it be okay for them to adopt children?
He went on to note that in a God-centered culture, homosexuality is a perversion, not a lifestyle choice. In todays world, many Christian people generally base their values and beliefs on the Bible, and using that guideline, homosexuality is wrong, which leads us to the conclusion that homosexuals adopting is wrong because a child should not be raised in a sinful environment.
According to the Green Bay Press Gazette, after the school published the article, a local homosexual couple complained, with one of them, Nick Uttecht, telling the district that he thinks the piece opposing gays as parents is hateful and should not have run. The newspaper said Uttecht worried that the strong language will hurt his children and could lead students to bully gay classmates.
School district officials quickly apologized for Wegners piece, calling it a form of bullying and disrespect, with district superintendent Todd Carlson declaring in a written statement: Offensive articles cultivating a negative environment of disrespect are not appropriate or condoned by the Shawano School District. Carlson added his assurance that the district was taking steps to prevent items of this nature from happening in the future.
Part of the districts preventive measures apparently included a little bullying on the part of Carlson toward Brandon Wegner, according to the Liberty Counsel, the legal advocacy group representing the student and his family in possible action against the district.
In a press release about the incident, the organization recalled that after the article was published, Brandon Wegner was subjected to hours of meetings with school administrators and staff, without his parents knowledge. Ultimately Wegner was hauled before Superintendent Carlson, who informed the young man that his column went against the bullying policy, and who gave him the opportunity to publicly express his regret over the piece.
When the young man informed Carlson that he had no regrets, and that he intended to stand firmly by what he had written and what he believed the superintendent allegedly berated Wegner, telling him that he had got to be one of the most ignorant kids to try to argue with [him] about this topic. According to the Liberty Counsels account, Carlson told Wegner that his article personally offended me, and threatened him with the observation that we have the power to suspend you if we want to.
Wegners parents responded to the verbal and psychological assault on their son by contacting Liberty Counsel, which sent a letter to the Shawano school district, demanding that it immediately apologize for its unconstitutional and irrational censorship of Mr. Wegners column, and provide assurances that it will no longer subject students to censorship for expressing their sincerely-held and constitutionally protected religious beliefs.
Libertys epistle added that it was simply irrational for the district to vehemently reject and subject Mr. Wegner to shame and public humiliation for his opinion, and pointed to the districts own policy, which encourages teachers and students to promote tolerance for the views and opinions of others, as well as for the right of an individual to form and hold different opinions or beliefs.
Mathew Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, pointed out that the bullying at Shawano High School is by Superintendent Todd Carlson and the school officials, not the student, Brandon Wegner.
He told Fox News that the districts superintendent wants everyone to accept homosexuality as normative and homosexual adoption as something that should be standard practices. In doing so, hes belittling the views ... of many people across this country. He is playing a zero-sum game. Hes not interested in dialogue.
Staver said that at this point in the conflict an apology from the district may not be enough. It was a very intimidating situation for this 15-year-old boy, he said. It was uncalled for. [The superintendent] crossed the line.
Homosexuals want us to believe that their preference is natural. Then they express a paternal desire, which can not be fullfulled by their own "nature." Which nature are the denying? By wanting to adopt, they are admitting that their lifestyle is not able to satisfy their instincts. By wanting to adopt they invalidate all of their arguments, in fact they invalidate themselves!
These are small sometimes violent groups imposing thier beliefs and desires on the majority by legislation.
Geez, it was a “pro-con” editorial. I’ll tell you another reason I don’t want Homosexuals adopting kids, besides all the validly Biblical reasons....I don’t want children raised by drama queens....I don’t want children raised by people whose life span is approximately half of the average American male...I don’t want children raised by people more likely to be alcolic, drug addicted, and suicide-prone than the average population....who have 40 times the sexual partners of heterosexual men....
This would have made news less than 1 second in my family. Somebody is crapping Cheerios before this is done and I don't eat cereal.
ya know why these articles piss me off... not because the kid got abused.... not because the gay community rallied to put him down... not because of his loss of free speech... but because at the next school board election every one of these people sitting on the board in judgement of this kid will be re-elected. People are not too busy to bitch, but they are too damn busy to research candidates and to vote in an off year election... stop bitchin and DO something... vote the bastards out
Probably a gay superintendent it sounds like.
Ironic that they would use bullying tactics on the 15 year old, while at that same time castigating the young man for violating the bullying policy.
Good grief!
When libs yammer on about “tolerance” what they really mean is “shut up”.
The hubris of the Left on display. And they wonder why those with conservative values are more likely to laugh at them than respect them...
It's the only way they can replicate -- by taking someone else's poor castoffs and "converting" them -- without the little one's choice. Cruel to say the least. Demonic certainly.
Government schools will always push the govenment’s agenda. This kid is greater than the Superintendent and he should be handed his worthless diploma now. Then he could further his education at home. The Superintendent’s “threat” of suspension is empty, as is the brain it came from.
What is the value of a Government School Diploma? You can get a job later. That’s it. It shows that you’ve successfully endured your 12 years. big woop.
Homeschool, peeps! Ignore these Government over-paid drones. Educate yourself.
Normally I wouldn’t suggest this but I would start looking for a good attorney and sue the school for rights violation.
Not necessarily. More like desire for power, lack of moral fiber, indoctrinated by diversity seminars run by clever perverts, and quaking at the cost to his district of suits initiated by perverts at the least hint of non-acceptance of their ways = how to ruin your career forever, anywhere in the good ol' USA.
The Gaystapo in action. A hint of future plans.
As the last school board meeting was discussing as we loaded up the moving van, "We need to fix the exodus of all our best students! Why are they all leaving to go elsewhere?"
Wisconsin......The state of single baby mommas' , and farmin boys with DUI's. A bar on every corner and a new daddy for every baby (the paycheck is bigger that way).
While you can. The freedom to do so WILL soon be taken away. By gutless wonders "educated" (brainwashed) in public schools in their formative years.
Young Mr. Wegner’s grammar and composition skills seem to fit him for modern “journalism,” if only he would get with the lib’ral program.
An old truism from my childhood ran thusly: "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach; those who can can neither do nor teach become administrators." Sort of a "Peter Principle," if you will... and one which is most apropos for a superintendent who apparently feels the need to compensate for the size of his own cerebrum.
