You have to ask? Of course, they did. They have to do their duty, you know.
I obviously have no idea what happened there, but it does remind me of one of the more important lessons taught in my reality-based self-defense program. The need to always shout 'I don't want to fight' 'move away please' 'stop threatening me' 'stop attacking me' as you are pounding someone's head into the pavement. Why? Witnesses. There will always be a witness, and shouting that will help a lot when the cop is taking witness statements. In most cases most witnesses do not even know what is happening, so shouting certain things will 'help' them remember.
Witness: "Yes officer, the guy wearing the white shirt was attacking the guy wearing the black shirt. The guy in the black shirt was trying his best to tell the other guy to stop, and he seemed very afraid. He was literally yelling at the other guy to let him go but I guess the guy in the white shirt refused to listen."
In reality-based self-defense (be it unarmed self defense like the more serious forms of Krav Maga, knife systems like the Filipino styles, or reality-based combat gunshooting) it is always VERY important to know how to ensure you do not put yourself into legal trouble by simply defending yourself. You'd be very surprised how a jury can react if you are trying to explain how you whipped out a karambit knife and sliced the person's neck, lashed at his clavicle, and followed up with a slice to his femoral artery going up into his groin. Very difficult, and more so that if you had used a gun. It is very important to ensure you have the law on your side, hence the LOUD statements.
It seems like Daley went for a reality-based gun fighting lesson (rather than simply going to the range and shooting at paper targets), and in this case he did the right thing. Note that the witness said she 'heard Daley yelling for help.' It makes it seem that Daley was being attacked, was asking for help, no one came, and he had to defend himself. Imagine if the witness hadn't said that. The story would have been 'neighbor murders man due to barking dog.'
This is why I strongly believe that people should go for a reality-based self-defense course at least once a year (more is much better, but at least once a year). Especially people who carry guns since they are the ones who have the strongest sense of 'being safe' due to their piece, yet in a real situation when a person is targeting YOU there will be a massive surge of adrenalin, all your fine motor skills will disappear and you will be left with only gross motor skills, and things will appear to move both fast and slow at the same time (like some mad metaphysics experiment). At that point you will revert to your LOWEST training, and if all you have done is point and shoot at paper targets in a range you are absolutely finished. For instance, I would put a lot of money on a skilled person who has trained in Filipino knife fighting who is within a certain range vs any person carrying a gun whose only experience is the range. 100% of the time my money would go to the skilled knife guy. Now, against someone who has gone for combat gun training the odds shit dramatically. Unfortunately, most people only go to the range and feel safe when in reality their safety depends on the availability of stupid perps. Not all perps are stupid.
Anyways, good for Mr. Daley. He was trained well. I hope he is a good guy.
