Santorum Was Right About Iran—When It Was Unpopular
Wall Street Journal ^ | 02/24/12 | Michael Ledeen

Posted on 02/24/2012 4:40:35 PM PST by writer33

Rick Santorum doesn't fit any of the stereotypes of current foreign-policy ideologies. He's too idealistic to be a "realist," too conservative and too religious to be a "neocon," and too revolutionary to be a "paleocon." He's an old-fashioned, feisty patriot, in the mold of Harry Truman and Ronald Reagan.

Mr. Santorum's hatred of tyranny traces back to his grandfather Pietro, who took the family from Lake Garda in northern Italy to Pennsylvania's coal country to escape Mussolini's dictatorship in the 1920s. Pietro Santorum worked in the mines until he was 72 and, as Mr. Santorum often says, taught him "to treasure the gift of freedom [and] to have faith in God's grace."

Mr. Santorum believes the United States must lead the struggle for freedom throughout the world, on grounds of morality and national security, which he believes go hand in hand. He does not like the drift away from leadership and engagement in that struggle, especially under President Obama. He often quotes Lech Walesa's recent lament: "The United States was always the last resort and hope for all other nations," Poland's first post-communist president said. "There was the hope, whenever something was going wrong, one could count on the United States. Today, we have lost that hope."

"The United States was always the last resort and hope for all other nations,"

True enough and we better get to saving ourselves fast because the cavalry isn't coming.

well ...back to the top...

...I will admit to being under impressed with Rick Santorum at the start of the race....

...but, my mind has changed... He's been steadfast in the face of evil and bitter attacks from the Rino-center and the Looney-left (aka Dimwit=Democrats)... All that being stated...my check is in the mail...

If we are to accept this, why haven’t we been more forceful with Syria?

I agree with Santorum on this, but many conservatives seem opposed to stopping the mindless bloodshed in Homs.

Salvation won't be found in politics but a moral man in the white house sure helps.

“Former supporters of the Hugo Chávez regime in Venezuela, worried at the direction of events in their country, have told American officials that there are Iranian missiles in Venezuela capable of hitting the U.S. More obvious are the Shiite mosques suddenly popping up in Venezuela and its near neighborhood. “

shhh....nobody tell Ron Paul - it would destroy his fantasy of Iran being no danger to the U.S.

I certainly don't want to get too involved in Syria but I trust Rick Santorum to do what he really believes is right.

Let us raise a standard to which the wise and honest can repair; the rest is in the hands of God.

Santorum was single until 1990 and never thought of enlisting?

I don’t know what Walesa’s frame of reference was but I would guess he was looking at the USA some years ago when the people were working to form a more perfect union.

Walesa knows that things are different. He turned down an invitation from the Occupy Wall Street crowd in the fall.

If we don't stop the mindless bloodshed then there certainly be more of it.

If we do, and the Syria government falls, there is a good chance they will be replaced by Muslim fundamentalists who will go on a vengeful killing spree of their own. Among the dead will be Syria's Christians.

Between Iraq and a hard place.

I mean it’s a lose lose. But Assad is an Iranian puppet.

I say kick his ass and let Akmadinajad condemn us.

Part of the problem is that there is no strong America out there holding a stick these days. Just the threat of military intervention used to be enough to bring both sides to the negotiating table.

These days, America is Barney Fife shooting ourselves in the foot at every opportunity while our enemies simply ignore us.

The end game of a Syrian civil war is lose-lose in so far as both sides hate us. However, the Ba'athist Syrians and the Iranians already hate us.
The conflict is win-win. The war alienates fundamentalist Sunni and Shia and the more Iranian Qom's unit and Hizbullah who die fighting the Muslim Brotherhood, the better. Let them all kill each other, Hama rules. Already, Hamas is breaking away from Iran and Hizbollah.

I happen to think that the best way to undermine Iran and end their nuclear program, or allow the ability to strike it, is to let the conflict continue. http://nycright.blogspot.com/2012/02/best-way-to-stop-iranian-nuclear-weapon.html Unlike North Africa

And just what war required us to have everyone enlist in 1990???? You are beyond duplicitous.

duplicitous? War? required? 1990?

Since when does it take a war for a guy who stays single until age 32, to pull a hitch at some point during those long, long, long, bachelor years?

I am curious why Santorum never felt the draw, he wasn’t married, I doubt that he was physically unfit, even his education was in a high demand area for both the active military and the Reserves.

“If we are to accept this, why haven’t we been more forceful with Syria?”

One reason not to be involved there is that the opposition is an Taliban-type bunch, and that will cause the 2.3 million Christians there to have to run for their lives (just as they’re doing in Egypt).

How long before we hear the critics of Rick go on and say that this message from Rick will alienate and scare the Independents and the Reagan Democrats ?
