Santorum talked himself out of the nomination
Charleston (WV) Daily Mail ^ | February 29, 2012 | Don Surber

It’s crunch time. I am not going to sugarcoat the news for conservatives. Hate me all you want, but Republicans have just about picked their nominee. Forget these headlines such as Paul Belaga’s “Romney Wins Michigan and Arizona, but Political Tourette’s Is Costing Him” or CNN‘s “Romney survives Michigan as all eyes turn to Super Tuesday” or the New York Daily News‘s “Mitt Romney avoids Michigan disaster, but has ‘blood on him’ heading into Super Tuesday: experts.” God does not roll dice with the universe, and neither does the Republican Party.

I am looking at the plurality wins in Arizona and Michigan and thinking Rick Santorum bit the dust, and it is his own fault.

The conventional wisdom is that Tuesday resolved nothing. From the Associated Press:

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Mitt Romney is trying to capitalize on twin victories in Arizona and Michigan as the GOP nomination race expands to the 10 states that vote on Super Tuesday.

Rival Rick Santorum, who narrowly lost in Michigan, faces splitting the conservative vote with Newt Gingrich as the former House speaker counts on Southern primaries to revive his campaign.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul remains a factor as he attempts to mine delegates in caucus states like North Dakota, where his campaign team says the process plays to his strengths. Super Tuesday is March 6, just three days after Saturday’s Washington state caucuses.

Romney’s slim victory — 41 percent to Santorum’s 38 percent — in his native Michigan raised questions about whether he would change his strategy. He acknowledged Tuesday that he had made personal mistakes in recent weeks and said he was trying to “do better and work harder.”

You are right, no guarantee, but Rush was citing a poll a few weeks ago that said Santorum’s votes would split between Romney and Newt, but Newt’s votes went in large percentage (85%? I don’t remember) to Santorum.

That doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, but that was the report.

Let’s say Little Ricky gets the nomination. Obama will destroy this 98 lb. weakling toot sweet. An agitated little child in a man’s body who thinks he’s a preacher. Just who I want to vote for, for president. Not.

Wait until after Super Tuesday. Santorum really stepped in some serious filth in MI when and HOW he pandered to Democrats. (See following article that sums it up)

Wall Street Billionaires and Michigan Workers

By Jay Nordlinger
February 28, 2012 4:07 P.M. Comments
46In his robocall to Michigan voters, Rick Santorum is saying, “Romney supported the bailout for his Wall Street billionaire buddies, but opposed the auto bailout. That was a slap in the face to every Michigan worker.”

For almost 60 years now, National Review has worked against this kind of crudity — crudity of thought and crudity of expression. And this is our guy? Santorum is the conservatives’ guy?

Many conservatives supported the bank bailout and opposed the auto bailout. You can look up arguments within NR editorials. Conservatives all over the country, in all sorts of forums, made arguments for and against — for and against either bailout. Those arguments continue now, retrospectively.

But is there any thinking or respectable conservative who uses Rick Santorum’s language — the bank bailout was for Mitt Romney’s “Wall Street billionaire buddies” while Michigan workers got their faces slapped? (Santorum opposed the auto bailout, too. Was he slapping workers’ faces?)

Ladies and gentlemen, this isn’t conservatism. It’s more like street-corner Marxism. What a strange and tragic pass we’ve reached.”

The answer to your question is “no”. Just look at this thread. The imbecile fanboy comments have been posted all primary season long first for one candidate and then another. Stupid conservatives are handing the nomination to Mittens.

Santorum needs to review the campaign style and speaches of RR. You can’t get the social conservative stuff done if you’re not elected. Then again, if Romney is elected we’ll never see the social conservative stuff done. How is Santorum polling against Romney in WV anyway?

That’s all well and good. But if Newt is our nominee, Obama will run against the cartoon pantomime Newt that has been constructed by the media (much as they have constructed a cartoon pantomime Sarah Palin)

The trick is to get a solid conservative under the radar and out front ahead of the curve, faster than they can be destroyed with gotcha news coverage and Saturday Night Live skits.

I don’t think it’s over yet. But Santorum definitely needs a better filter. He comes off as way too sanctimonious. And does not know when to zip it.

He needs to win Ohio or it’s probably over.

So true. I never thought of it that way. That's exactly what they did to Palin. They saw a bright star at her unveiling in August 2008. And they panicked - as did Obama. (Where did this come from??). Then her convention speech just floored them. So they went into overdrive and started dumpster diving, SNL skits, late night comedy punch lines etc. And they continued through 2011 for the kill shot - to blunt any future plans.

You (a few) people are ridiculous.

Michigan is a fairly liberal state.

What do you expect.

....look around...Union crackers and Birkie folks galore..whites are more liberal than average.

51% voted for Obama

nationwide it was 55%

and in the Cotton States it was near 90%

it's Santorum’s social conservatism that has got him this far..not being a moderate like some here really want for electability

but..it's got to be he or Newt at some point...no question and right now he has more velocity than Newt

but maybe after Super Tuesday they can figure it out

I have no question Rick woulda beat Mitt even in Michigan had Newt not been there

but not sure if Newt would have without Rick

and I am a Newt supporter first but i will take Rick in a yankee second over Mitt

that is the objective for now

it amazes me how we have freepers who parrot the same "please no culture war" bullshite the GOPE and media ape for one another

LET ME TELL ALL YOU JACKASSES SOMETHING..WITHOUT SOCIAL CONSERVATISM THERE IS NONE...YOU ARE A DAMN LIBERAL, DON'T TRY TO KID YERSELF!! DOESN'T MATTER WHAT PART OF THE COUNTRY YOU ARE IN. THIS POLITICAL WAR IS FOR THE SOUL, NOT THE DAMNED CHECKBOOK...YOU QUISLINGS..SPIT

I love how you guys think Obama is so mighty. It is a weak argument.

If you want to go up against Obama, you have to win in the primaries first.

Newt won 1 state so far and has trailed Ron Paul in many of the other states.

How mighty is that?

GOOD GOD!

I’m in full agreement with everything you said, AND how you said it!

Will wonders never cease?

Conservatism without “Social Conservatism” is nothing but “greed and avarice.”

Obama will win and the Republicans won’t even have a fighter leading in to the loss. That’s the least that I had hoped for. Romney is just soggy cereal, melted ice cream, flat soda.

What does that have to do with anything?

The GOP is the only Party against abortion.

The issue is choosing presidential candidates.

Well duh. One way to win elections is taking votes away from the other party.

Obama won doing just that.

Well, well, I guess we are electing a Church Pastor after all then! (Isn't that special?)

But now that you mention “Union Crackers”, it's funny that you would bring up one of the biggest ones of all in the race, (Other than Obama) who would be Rick Santorum.

It has to do with confuting a supremely stupid statement on your part....

That you seem to lack either the intellectual integrity or acumen to concede the point is incidental.

exactly. How many times did Obama make an a$$ out of himself during the ‘08 campaign?

Good grief.

It’s amazing what we consider to be a fatal flaw when you hold it up next to the other side.
