Pap smear every five years? Panel says it's safe

Most women can go as long as five years between cervical cancer screenings as long as they make sure to get both a Pap smear and an HPV test when they do get examined, a government panel said Wednesday.

The interval between cervical cancer screenings can safely be extended for women between the ages of 30 and 65, according to the new recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

Women ages 21 to 30 should still get a Pap smear every three years, the interval currently recommended. But those younger than 21 and older than 65 can skip the screen altogether, the experts concluded.

The panel is urging a extended intervals in screenings in an attempt to cut back on the number of women who end up being treated for lesions that might resolve on their own.

The downside could be a very small potential increase in the number of women who might die of cervical cancer, experts said.

“It’s a trade-off,” said Dr. Michael LeFevre, co-vice chair of the task force and a professor of family and community medicine at the University of Missouri at Columbia.

No profit margin in pap smears, the money is in the vaccine.

Besides, as Hillary said, we have to decrease the worlds population by 75%. Ya have to start somewhere.

Interesting. My motherIL died at 52 from cervical cancer, it was four years between her Pap smears, she delayed getting one because they moved and had never had an abnormal one. When she went she had stage 4, died thirteen months later.
My niece was diagnosed with pre cervical cancer at 19 when she had her first Pap.
Yea, I can see how these new rules are beneficial.

I’m sure the “very small” number of women who end up dying of cervical cancer will, as they die, take comfort in the fact that they died for the good cause of socialized medicine.

No Michael, it’s your Mom.
But think of how much the public saved in healthcare costs by not treating her.

20% of cervical cancers detected after age 65.

Not worth worrying about this age group, though, they have used up all their lifetime worth of govt healthcare

Spend govt money on other priorities, like free abortion and free birth control

They basically did the same thing with breast cancer last year -- mammograms? Why should women in the 40s bother with them?? There's just no need!

Obama wants to cut the costs of healthcare. If people die as a result, it's not his concern.

What irks me is that women all across the country are likely to support the guy who is killing them. These women will despise Republicans as "misogynists".
