Three manholes on Huntington Avenue exploded today, sending flames shooting out of the steel covers as Nstar officials had just finished announcing all the power in the area had been restored — except to the Prudential Tower.
Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said one manhole had “flames coming out of it” and it was put out. The manhole was still seen smoking this afternoon.
Nstar spokesman Michael Durand said a sudden “high demand” for electricity, caused when workers powered up nearby homes and businesses, caused a series of permanent cables to fail, sparking the explosions. It knocked out power to 1,500 customers, literally minutes after Nstar officials held a press conference a few blocks over declaring that virtually the entire city, aside from the Pru on its separate circuit, had its power restored.

Oh yeah, it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. That manhole cover looks like it could have put someone’s eye out...or crushed their skull.
The headline might take on a whole new connotation if it said SF Bay area.

A sudden supply of power huh? That’s BS. Present power has no compunction to go anywhere without an attractive load. Somebody F-ed the wiring on HV and somebody pushed the breaker.
Nay Nay I say! We have a generator just for this reason.
My neighbor’s actually bitched about the noise! If they weren’t screaming, rude liberals, I would have invited them over!
