Nadia Lockyer should take an unpaid leave

Success in life is a wonderful thing, but it's always sweeter when you earn it.

Nadia Lockyer, an Alameda County supervisor currently enrolled in a substance abuse treatment program, has yet to earn the success she has enjoyed in the political world.

The goodwill that's been extended to her by voters, colleagues and employers, and even her annual $143,000 salary, seem more like an honorarium paid on behalf of her husband, state Treasurer Bill Lockyer, one of the state's most powerful Democrats.

Supervisor Lockyer has attended only 17 of the 31 board meetings held since she took office in January 2011. She made about $8,400 per meeting - that's more than most people earn for a full month of work.

She hasn't attended a regular board meeting since November, and last month she announced she was entering rehabilitation for chemical dependency. All the while, she's been collecting her full paycheck.

Never mind the lack of wisdom it took for the political novice to win the election by wildly outspending her competition thanks to cash raised by her husband. The power couple should now have the common sense to agree that she take an unpaid leave of absence from her post.
