Hazel dickens was one of the greats of course. But I was listing our personal friends in Bluegrass who have passed. We didn’t ever have the privilege of knowing Hazel Dickens. Love her singing though. My husband spent years in the Bluegrass world. We had many friends and acquaintances in the business, lots of them are still living. Doyle Lawson has been a family friend since the 70s. The Country Gentlemen stayed at our home when playing close by. Bluegrass people are not elitists.
We first met Bill Monroe in Nashville, Indiana. He was there to visit his sister. He invited hubby to come to Bean Blossom and sit in on a jam session. That was back in 66 I think. Bill was so broke back then he couldn’t afford to stay in a motel. His old bus was broken down and his son was working on it because they couldn’t afford a mechanic. Those were hard days for Bill. Everybody thought his glory days were over. I don’t think he even realized how famous he would eventually become in his old age.
There are so many memories connected to all the Bluegrass musicians I couldn’t relate them if I typed all night. Our son is carrying on the Bluegrass tradition on our family.
Fascinating. Thanks for sharing your memories.
