Submission guidelines at the Dystel & Goderich website (original emphasis): "[Y]ou should describe in two or three sentences—no more—what the book will be about. This is followed by another brief paragraph on why it is being written and then another on why you are qualified to write it....Finally, there should be a more formal narrative Bio of the author."

The book people say it was a "Fact checking error"? Don't the book people realize what a ridiculous statement that is?

1. Fact checking: For instance, before I can fact check information in a piece of writing, say, in a short bio, I must first have a copy of the bio before me.

2. That is, one cannot fact check the accuracy of the details in a document that is blank.

3. Obama: In other words, the book person could only fact check the accuracy of Obama's short bio if Obama himself first wrote and provided the details contained in the short bio.

4. For instance, I don't see Obama charging into the book company's office after the book came out and screaming that the facts in his bio were all wrong, because surely Obama saw the short bio before the book went to the printers.

5. Really, does any normal person believe that someone other than Obama could have provided the names of exotic places about Obama's background, exotic places such as Kenya and Hawaii, without Obama's permission or knowledge?

6. Does any normal person believe that the short bio was published without Obama first approving it before it went to the printers?

7. This Obama fact checking controversy reminded me about a story I read a few years ago: A famous athlete---I forgot his name---wrote an autobiography.

8. But when the autobiography came out, the athlete complained that he didn't say some things in the book.

9. A lot of people made fun of the athlete after he complained about the details in his own autobiography.

10. In summary, it is obvious that Obama himself, and nobody else, submitted the details about Kenya, Hawaii, and Indonesia in the short bio.

11. That is, the book people took Obama's word that what he wrote in his short bio was true, because they were not going to spend time, energy, and money to send people all over the world to "fact check" if Obama actually lived in Kenya, Hawaii, and Indonesia as his short bio says.

12. Again, I believe that the book people---agents and publishers--- would routinely accept as fact that Obama was telling the truth about his own background in his short bio, because the short bio really had nothing to do with the book itself.
