The Times-Picayune: Less sass and flash in 'Nawlins

The words flowed over me like a cold shower, leaving a chill: "The New Orleans Times-Picayune will no longer be a daily newspaper in print. It will publish three times a week."

I stood in the silence of my memories.

As a kid growing up in Bay St. Louis I read three, sometimes four, daily newspapers, The Times-Picayune and New Orleans Item, the Sun Herald, and on occasion the New Orleans States. And, of course, I read and wrote for my dad's weekly, the Sea Coast Echo, one of three weeklies in Bay St. Louis. For someone who loved newspapers, things couldn't have been better...

My humble guess is that by 2020, ninety-five percent of the papers in America (except the Wall Street Journal and USA Today), will be three times a week. By 2030, I don’t think anyone will be able to buy a paper in physical form...it’ll all be digital.

New Orleans is a cesspool. Travel there at your own risk.

Oh, the horror! Fish wrap and bird cage liner available only three times per week? What shall become of us?

I'm impressed that there is a Farve running around that is not in jail. Good job Gregory.
The joke when Green Bay won the Superbowl in New Orleans was that they had to release most of the Farve’s to go to the game. The reality was it was true. BTW I live very close to Farve country.

I recently moved from Gulfport to DC. The AFRH down there had monthly trips to NoLa, and I usually went to get away.

Not all of it is a cesspool, but it does have it's share of cess... and it is mostly below sea level!!!

I can remember back during or shortly after the last presidential election I had a short discussion on line with one of the Times Picayune Reporters, Jan Moller, jmoller@timespicayune.com She had some very negative comments about Sarah Palin. She no doubt had great expectations of Barrack Obama. I wonder if she still has a job at the Times Picayune or is it about to play out. Well well... How time always changes things!

I was born and raised in New Orleans but have been living in the ‘burbs for the last 40 years. Just yesterday there were 4 separate daytime shootings where two people were killed, including a 5 year old who was attending a birthday party. I remember my city when I was younger and you could walk anywhere at night without any fears whatsoever. It’s a shame what it has become. New Orleans has been in control of Democrats for as long as I can remember. I don’t think in my lifetime of 64 years we ever had a Republican mayor, although I’ve heard that Ray Nagin was a Republican. I’m not sure if that’s correct or not.
