Jumblatt urges countries to end support for Assad

Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt said he wished that countries still supporting the Syrian regime would draw lessons from the "civilized event" in Egypt and allow their own people to practice democracy.

"Egypt and the Arab world have lived extraordinary historic moments in the past two days with President Mohammad Mursi taking the presidency, ushering in a new era and a new stage," Jumblatt said in his weekly article to be published by the PSP's weekly newspaper Al-Anbaa.

"If a lesson is to be drawn from this it is that injustice cannot last indefinitely. I wish that some states that are still backing the ruling gang in Syria will benefit from the civilized Egyptian event and allow their people to practice democracy ... because the Syrian people will sooner or later crush these gangs and win," Jumblatt said in reference to Russia, China and Iran, which back the Assad regime.

Jumblatt chaired a meeting Monday attended by around 700 senior PSP officials, where he upheld his support for the government and for the resumption of National Dialogue to defuse political tension, a PSP source said.

So, when the Socialist Party split and one faction became the Progressive Socialist Party, what name did the other faction take? Regressive Socialist Party? Reactionary Socialist Party?
